UPDATE: Ted Roof was actually going to be a guest speaker at Central Gwinnett’s banquet on Thursday night, but then had to pull out because it’s the NCAA dead period. However, Wofford said that Rood later had gotten clearance from compliance to speak on Thursday because he wasn’t officially with Georgia Tech yet, but that the two sides couldn’t get together in time.
What about Georgia Tech and Trey Johnson? Would he consider the Yellow Jackets now that Roof is there? Wofford said he hadn’t talked to Roof about Johnson in any recruiting capacity.
“Outside of the whole recruiting deal, Trey and Coach Roof have a connection because of Central Gwinnett. (Roof) played linebacker at Central Gwinnett, and he gave Trey his first offer a couple of years ago. They are always going to have that. They almost have like a father-son relationship.
“I feel like Trey is solid to Ohio State. He has been through so much with all the coaching changes at Auburn. He feels like (Urban Meyer) is in a stable spot, and that’s what he’s looking for. That takes nothing away from his relationship with Coach Roof outside of football.
“Trey already had an offer from Georgia Tech a year ago or whenever. I guess you’ll never know if Coach Roof had been there from the beginning, and was running his defense at Georgia Tech when Trey got his first offer. I don’t think he’ll switch from Ohio State but crazier things have happened. Not only is Coach Roof down there, but also his former high school teammate, Francis Kallon.”
On another note, former UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and the rest of Auburn’s defensive staff are scheduled to invade Central Gwinnett between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday. Auburn hasn’t given up on Johnson, who de-committed from the Tigers last month after they switched defensive coordinators for the third time in three years.
“Trey said they told him ‘We know you’re committed to Ohio State but we’re going to grind it out until the end with you. We’re going to just keep coming and coming.’”
Will Johnson take an official visit to Auburn? “Right now, no. But Auburn is trying. They want a chance to sell the new staff.”
