LB Tommy ‘Two Thumbs’ Eichenberg (Rose Bowl Def MVP, All B1G, All-American, Las Vegas Raiders)

He seems more like the kind of guy that buys his lunch every day to me, I don’t see him settling for something from home. Definitely has driveway warrior written all over him in my IMO, can’t see him wasting his time going to a gym. Wouldn’t surprise me if he beat up the coaches son for acting too entitled too.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2020 AND BEYOND FROM OHIO STATE'S 10 FRESHMEN WHO REDSHIRTED LAST SEASON

LB TOMMY EICHENBERG

2019 in review: Eichenberg came back after an undisclosed injury hampered him throughout preseason camp to play in four games but was on the field for just five defensive snaps. He only played special teams against Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game and Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.

A look toward 2020: Opportunities won’t be plentiful for Eichenberg, who’s expected to play either middle or weakside linebacker. Malik Harrison left for the NFL, but Tuf Borland, Baron Browning, Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell are among the returners at the two inside linebacker spots. Eichenberg playing special teams in the final two games of the season show that he might have impressed as the year progressed, but he doesn’t have anything resembling a clear path for playing time next season.

Long-term outlook: Once Borland and Browning graduate following the 2020 season, the next wave of linebackers will take over. Mitchell, Gant and K’Vaughan Pope are the favorites for those spots. But all three will graduate after the 2021 season, meaning Eichenberg will have multiple opportunities to win starting jobs in the next couple of years.

Ohio State 2019 Class Report — LB Tommy Eichenberg

Tommy-Eichenberg-postgame-1000x780.jpg

Tommy Eichenberg was originally committed to Boston College before Ohio State came calling. In fact, he didn’t commit to OSU until a week or two before the early signing day in December of 2018.

Eichenberg was a 4-star linebacker at Cleveland St. Ignatius and ranked the No. 19 inside backer in the nation. Nationally, he was the No. 327 player overall and the No. 8 player in the state of Ohio.

He signed with Ohio State over offers from Boston College, Michigan, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ball State, and more.

2019 Season
The Buckeyes signed three linebackers in the 2019 class and Eichenberg was the only one of the three who didn’t see the field last season. Being an inside linebacker, however, the position was a bit stocked with upperclassmen in front of him.

With Tuf Borland, Baron Browning, Malik Harrison, and K’Vaughan Pope in the two deep inside, there wasn’t really any need or room for a freshman. Even the two freshmen who did play — Craig Young and Cade Stover — didn’t see all that much time last year. Stover was able to maintain his redshirt, while Young was mostly active on special teams.

Now What For Tommy Eichenberg
The two inside linebacker positions are still very crowded, but with the departure of Malik Harrison, there is a starting job up for grabs.

In this Ohio State defense, the Will and Mike can be interchangeable, which means they can maneuver guys around to find their best fit. That gives the two-deep some malleability, which is good for a guy like Tommy Eichenberg who is a true inside linebacker.

Still, with Borland and Browning back as seniors in 2020, and Dallas Gant, K’Vaughan Pope, and Teradja Mitchell as juniors, there isn’t a whole lot of room for a redshirt freshman to make his mark on the defense. And that’s not even including Justin Hilliard, who may be back for his sixth year.

Eichenberg’s time on defense may still be a year or two away just due to numbers. But don’t think the expectations still aren’t very high for him.

The staff loves his instincts at the position, calling him smart and tough. Linebackers coach Al Washington labeled him a “contact seeker,” which is one of his highest compliments.

There is every confidence in Eichenberg that he will eventually be a very successful starting linebacker at Ohio State, but the depth chart ahead of him is crowded. What it isn’t, however, is terribly experienced. Even though these are upperclassmen ahead of him, the trio of Gant, Pope, and Mitchell has all of 53 career tackles.

Like Eichenberg, however, they have also had veterans playing in front of them. One of those veterans is now gone, which means a new starting Will linebacker will need to be found. Eichenberg will be one of at least a half-dozen competitors for that spot, and one of the least experienced.

The best will play, however, and this will be his first true shot to prove he belongs.

Room, Tommy Eichenberg 'An Absolute Gem'

In an alternate timeline, Ohio State redshirt freshman linebacker Tommy Eichenberg would be getting ready for his second year with Boston College instead of his second year as a Buckeye, where he is now trying to figure out how in the heck to move up a depth chart as loaded as this one.

Eichenberg committed to Boston College two years ago tomorrow, but a late September offer from Ohio State and an offer from Michigan a week later forced him to take a step back and re-exemine his situation.

Two days after Urban Meyer announced his retirement on December 4 and Ryan Day was named his successor, Eichenberg became Day's first commitment.

And before committing, he no doubt took a look at the linebacker room he would soon be joining.

Now 18 months later, Ohio State has seven linebackers who are juniors or seniors this season, and all seven are expecting to play.

Meanwhile, Eichenberg is working towards his first significant action as a Buckeye.

Despite losing starting linebacker Malik Harrison to graduation and the NFL, there are a number of viable candidates to fill the vacancy.

Through no fault of their own, however, it would be a surprise if Eichenberg or OSU's other second-year 'backer Craig Young emerged as starters simply because of the number of veterans ahead of them.

The Buckeyes return experienced starters Pete Werner, Tuf Borland, and Baron Browning, as well as last year's second-team linebackers Justin Hilliard, Teradja Mitchell, K'Vaughan Pope, and Dallas Gant.

All are experienced and they are all good enough to be starting at Ohio State.

They are also good at making sure that Eichenberg and Young aren't left behind.

"Unlike any place I’ve ever been, I think Ohio State does a great job of setting up a culture that pays it forward," linebackers coach Al Washington said back in December.

"Tuf Borland and Baron Browning look at the younger guys and see themselves as being responsible for them. So everything they do is being watched."

I'm telling you guys... Bobby Carpenter 2.0

Or James Laurinaitis since it looks like he's an MLB. "A contact seeker" that's some bad ass stuff. Only Mitchell has that reputation.

(You know you're a by buckeye when your auto spell corrects for Laurinaitis)
