Tommy Eichenberg thrived in Jim Knowles' defense at Ohio State and could be in for a historic season as captain of the Buckeyes in 2023. The fifth-year senior tied for second in the Big Ten with 120 total tackles last season behind Butkus Award winner Jack Campbell from Iowa. Eichenberg nearly doubled his number of tacklers from the previous year when he had 64. There is an advantage to being the middle linebacker in Knowles’ scheme. When he was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State in 2021, Malcolm Rodriguez finished No. 4 among all Power Five players in total tackles with 131.

Eichenberg has been one of the leaders of the Buckeyes' defense this fall. Across nine appearances in 2023, the Cleveland native has recorded a team-best 75 tackles, with the next-closest player, fellow linebacker Steele Chambers, at 54 tackles in the same number of games. Eichenberg has also collected 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, four quarterback hits and one forced fumble for the Buckeyes.
In 2022, Eichenberg was named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award but did not become a finalist, as the Butkus Foundation selected Jamon Dumas-Johnson (Georgia), Daiyan Henley (Washington State), Ivan Pace Jr. (Cincinnati), Drew Sanders (Arkansas) and the award's winner, Jack Campbell (Iowa), over him. Eichenberg finished the season with 120 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, one touchdown and three pass breakups. He received an All-Big Ten and All-American honors for his efforts.

Marvin Harrison Jr. and Tommy Eichenberg were both named as semifinalists for national player of the year awards on Monday.
Harrison is one of 17 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which honors college football’s most outstanding player, and Eichenberg is one of 20 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which recognizes college football’s most outstanding defensive player.
Both players are semifinalists for those respective awards for the second year in a row.
Eichenberg earned a spot among the Bednarik Award semifinalists for the second year in a row by recording a team-leading 75 tackles in Ohio State’s first nine games of the season, leading a defense that currently ranks second nationally in points allowed per game (9.9) and fourth in the FBS in yards allowed per game (262.2). He missed Ohio State’s most recent game against Michigan State with an arm injury, but Ryan Day expressed optimism on Saturday night that Eichenberg would be able to return soon, describing his status as “week-to-week.”
The Ohio State fifth-year senior is one of six linebacker finalists for the Bednarik Award along with Alabama’s Dallas Turner, Clemson’s Jeremiah Trotter Jr., N.C. State’s Payton Wilson, Old Dominion’s Jason Henderson and Texas A&M’s Edgerrin Cooper.
Three finalists for both the Maxwell and Bednarik Award will be named on Nov. 28, while the winners of both awards will be named during ESPN’s College Football Awards on Dec. 8.

I get shelving Tommy for The Game, that's when we really need him. Hope it doesn't cost him any awards, but he doesn't strike me as one that would be upset with that approach.

Day said he is expecting linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and safety Josh Proctor to both “have a good week of practice” after missing last week’s game against Michigan State, though decisions on whether they will play against Minnesota will be made later in the week.
