Ohio State's Klein shines in first major action of season

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State has kicked off a four-week stretch against heavy underdogs that might have fans dozing off. But that's not going to be a problem for Buckeye backups like sophomore linebacker Storm Klein.

He's never felt more awake.

Klein and another reserve linebacker, Tony Jackson, combined for nine tackles in their first extensive action as coach Jim Tressel and his staff made liberal substitutions in Saturday's 43-7 win against Ohio University.

"Coach (Luke) Fickell is always telling us to be ready, to practice as if we're going to play, because when we get in that's our chance to shine," said Klein, who finished with one solo tackle and three assists as the understudy to middle linebacker Brian Rolle. "Everyone's looking to get a chance to get loose and show why we're here."

The performances by Klein, a three-time All-Ohioan for Licking Valley, and Jackson were encouraging because the Buckeyes' depth at linebacker is being tested. Andrew Sweat, who starts in the base 4-3 defense, sat out the game with an undisclosed injury, and OSU decided to redshirt junior Etienne Sabino after he got beat out by Sweat. Another linebacker, Dorian Bell, got banged up in the game.

"You sit there and learn from the other guys and know (playing time) is going to happen," Klein said. "That experience of going out there with (some of the starters) and playing fast helps a lot."

Klein has been playing catch-up since sitting out the opener against Marshall with a hamstring injury.

"It was bugging me in camp, but it's something I've had to deal with," Klein said. "I couldn't take as many reps in practice, and it held me back a little."

Klein hopes to give the Buckeyes' abysmal special teams a boost. He was in on some kickoff returns and kick coverage units against the Bobcats. A 99-yard kickoff return by the Bobcats came on the heels of last week's win against Miami in which the Hurricanes returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, Saturday's return by Julian Posey (older brother of OSU receiver DeVier Posey) was called back because of an illegal block in the back.

"We've been talking about it nonstop," Klein said about the Buckeyes' "special" problems. "When you're good, nobody talks about special teams, but when you're bad, everybody points to it.

"The effort and the speed are there. We just have to get better."

FROM STAFF REPORTS

COLUMBUS -- Licking Valley graduate Storm Klein finished his second regular season at Ohio State by recording two tackles on special teams in the Buckeyes' 37-7 win against Michigan.

Klein, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound middle linebacker, is a backup to Brian Rolle and also plays on special teams.

After missing the first two games, Klein appeared in the last 10 games and finished the regular season with 16 total tackles -- nine solo and seven assists -- as well one tackle for loss.

He also had an interception against Purdue, returning it 13 yards.

In two seasons with the Buckeyes, Klein has recorded 26 total tackles. With Rolle graduating, he should get his first chance of significant playing in 2011.

While at Valley, Klein was a three-time all-state performer and was Ohio Gatorade player of the year as a senior, when he rushed for 1,797 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also had 48 tackles and two sacks as a linebacker as he helped lead the Panthers to a 12-2 record and the state semifinals.

Klein had just more than 6,000 career rushing yards and 99 touchdowns during his high school career. He also helped lead Valley to the 2007 state finals. The Panthers went 46-7 during his career.

Klein 'competing like crazy'

Before Uhlenhake took questions from the audience, he talked about the values that head coach Jim Tressel instills in the players and commented about former Licking Valley standout Storm Klein.

Klein, who will be a junior linebacker this fall, has seen limited action and been used mostly on special teams during his first two years.

The Buckeyes lost two of their starting linebackers and Uhlenhake thinks Klein will have an opportunity to compete for a starting spot.

?Storm is a football player, and he?s competing like crazy,? Uhlenhake said. ?He loves to hit people, he loves the weight room and he?s working hard. He?s a tenacious kid. He has the talent to be a really good football player, and getting more and more reps will really help him become a better football player.

?I?m sure he?s going to play a lot this year, but I don?t make those decisions as far as who plays. But he?ll get a chance to show what he?s made of this spring.?

COLUMBUS -- Storm Klein's Ohio State teammates have his back.

The former Licking Valley star, with a chance to earn a starting linebacker spot as a junior for the Buckeyes, has been slowed by a hamstring injury the past two weeks.

He was forced to stand on the sidelines in uniform and watch Saturday as the offense beat the defense 59-27 in the annual spring game at Ohio Stadium.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder regularly has been touted as a possible starter, with senior Andrew Sweat the only returning starter at linebacker. The injury is a setback, but most don't expect Klein to be down for too long.

"He has worked hard for this, but the injury just hasn't healed like he wanted it to in the spring," said Sweat, who had 10 tackles Saturday, leading an OSU defense that recorded seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

"Storm is a great player. He will add another aspect to our defense, and the competition (at linebacker)."

Buckeye Father Responds To SI

The father of one of the Ohio State players accused of wrong-doing by Sports Illustrated has decided to issue a response to what was printed earlier this week by writer George Dohrmann. Junior linebacker Storm Klein was listed as one of the players that sold personal items for tattoos or money, and his father, Jason Klein, has issued this response to the charges.

"I have raised my son right," Jason Klein stressed Thursday evening. "Storm has no tattoos on his body whatsoever. He doesn't have a drug problem, and multiple tests prove that. I have every single bit of his Ohio State memorabilia in my possession."

"I will be meeting with attorneys shortly to pursue action against the NCAA and Sports Illustrated," he continued. "That's all I have to say at this time."

Re: BUCKEYE Dad Responds To SI

I left this a free article on purpose. I want this printed on every web site out there..........

It is the least we owe these athletes.

You guys can post this anywhere you'd like on the net............

Jason Klein is the guy you want in your fox hole when the bullets start flying. Not wise to piss him off.

The first thing I thought when I read the SI article was what would you do if you were one of the suspended players and you knew you were innocent. If Storm Klein has been wrongly accused, I hope he and his father throw the book at SI. Best of luck.

He's going to take on the NCAA too. I would love for all of this nonsense that has been blown out of proportion, misrepresented, etc. to turn table on all the yahoos who have intentionally lied and slandered Coach Tressel and the Ohio State Football team.

I actually hope that multiple law suits are filed and these guys get a taste of their own medicine. It's time to "OUR HONOR DEFEND" and people stop being the media's punching bag. Enough is enough.
