Plain Dealer staff reports, December 04, 2008 3:30 p.m.

Ohio State recruit and Licking Valley senior standout Storm Klein was named Gatorade's Ohio Football Player of the Year on Thursday.

Klein, a 6-3, 225-pound running back, linebacker and punter, rushed for 1,797 yards and 24 touchdowns on 253 carries. He tallied 48 tackles and two sacks for a defense that allowed just 13.5 points per game and punted 20 times, averaging 40.7 yards per kick.

Klein becomes a finalist for the national award to be announced later this month.

Klein: 'This is where I want to be'
Valley's Klein one of 25 recruits to officially sign with Ohio State

COLUMBUS ? The offer was made nearly two years ago, it was accepted more than a year ago and Storm Klein had already been enrolled for the past month.

But when Storm?s father, Jason, saw his son wearing his No. 32 Ohio State football jersey for the first time, he was nearly overwhelmed with emotion.

?As soon as I saw him in his jersey, it about brought a tear to my eye,? Jason Klein said. ?Everything has just come together, and it?s just an amazing thing.?

The worst-kept secret in Licking County became official Wednesday, when the Licking Valley graduate signed with the Buckeyes on national signing day.

Klein, who is projected to play linebacker at OSU, was one of 25 players to sign with the Buckeyes, their largest recruiting class since 2002.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Klein is also one of four players already enrolled at Ohio State, a fact that made Wednesday?s signing a mere formality.

?I?ve been here for a month now, so it?s kind of weird I?m signing to become a Buckeye,? Klein said. ?But it?s nice. It?s a special day and obviously I?m happy to get the recruiting over. It?s definitely a relief. It?s cool, though, it?s like official now.?

High expectations aside, Klein just getting started

Licking Valley's Storm Klein, right, is one of four members of Jim Tressel's 2009 class to enroll early at Ohio State.

For fans of football player nicknames, Ohio State's signing of Storm Klein could be a godsend.

If forecasts prove true for the linebacker from Licking Valley High School, just think of the possibilities: Thunder Storm, Pain Storm, Storm Warning, Storm the Bastions, Category 5 Storm, or what the heck, D-Klein.

But Klein is the first to say hold the sobriquets, at least for now. It was apparent to him from the first day he checked in to Ohio State as an early enrollee last month that he was in a new and rarefied atmosphere.

"My locker is right next to James,' " Klein said.

"James" is James Laurinaitis, OSU's Butkus Award-winning middle linebacker and three-time All-American. Laurinaitis might be done playing for the Buckeyes, but he is still going to school while preparing for the NFL draft.

Not that Klein is a hero-worshipper, but ?

"He's a guy I admire and look up to," he said. "It's been a trip; it's definitely cool.

"But at the same time, I want to be where he is one day. So just kind of watching him under the radar, he stays after practice and he busts his butt, and he deserves to be where he is right now. I just hope I can do the same thing.

"He tells me if I need to know anything, just let him know. I haven't needed anything yet, but I wouldn't mind sitting down with him and getting a little feel for what it's going to be like to play out here."

Storm is another of those small town Ohio kids who always wanted to be a Buckeye. What seperates him are his physical skills are not only good enough to get him a scholly to tOSU, but enough to make him a star, if he works hard enough.

Here is a kid who would have been maybe a 5* kid if he played against to notch competition and had attended some of the summer camps put on by the shoe companies and recruitniks.

Get Storm some time under his belt to learn the system and get acclimated to the difference in the speed of the college game and he has star written all over him, and it could not happen to a nicer kid (or a kid with a cooler name )

ootball: Storm Klein: Storm heading for Columbus
Molly Gray
Issue date: 2/24/09

Despite losing James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman, Ohio State football is stacked with young linebackers. Four freshmen players will join a number of returning players next year, all vying to lead the defense. One such freshman, Storm Klein, has potential to take the competition by, well, storm.

Klein, named Ohio's Gatorade Player of the Year last season, is one of four recruits who are already on campus, working out and taking classes. Participating in winter workouts will give Klein needed experience over the other incoming linebackers, said Kevin Noon, publisher of Buckeyegrove.com. However, it doesn't necessarily mean he is going to jump the guys that have already been here a few years.

"Storm is coming into a position that is so loaded, that even though you're losing headliners like Laurinaitis and Freeman, there are still guys out there that are going to have reps on him and be ahead of him in the depth chart," Noon said.

Storm Klein gets a chance to become a "Junior World Champion". This article incorrectly assumes that Klein and Mewhort are still in HS, when they've both been at tOSU since January.

8 teams from around the world will play in Canton from June 27 thru July 5.

Klein, Mewhort To Play For Team USA

STORM KLEIN of Newark, Ohio, and JACK MEWHORT of Sylvania, Ohio, both incoming freshman at Ohio State University, have been selected to play for USA Football's 2009 Junior National Team which will compete in the sport's first junior world championship this summer. Klein, a 6-2, 225-pound linebacker from Licking Valley (Ohio) High School, and Mewhort, a 6-6, 285-pound center from Toledo St. John's High School, are among 36 graduating high school seniors soon to enter 27 college football programs who will play on America?s first national team in the sport comprised of players aged 19 and under. USA Football's Junior National Team roster will ultimately consist of 45 student-athletes.

USA Football, an independent non-profit and the sport's national governing body on youth and amateur levels, has built America's first Junior National Team in the sport to compete in the eight-nation, four-continent 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship in Canton, Ohio, from June 27-July 5. National football teams from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Sweden have qualified to join the United States to pursue the sport's first world championship on the international junior level (19 and under).

USA Football's Junior National Team is led by CHUCK KYLE, head coach of Cleveland St. Ignatius High School, who has led his Wildcats to 10 of Ohio's past 21 state titles, including two USA TODAY 'national championships.'

"It will be an historic moment for American football as great athletes from around the world come to Canton to see who will be crowned Junior World Champion," Ohio State University head coach JIM TRESSEL said. "It's great that a couple of Ohio guys and Buckeyes will be able to represent their country in such a competition. I know it will be an unforgettable experience for them."

Klein was a three-time all-state performer and was named Ohio's Gatorade Player of the Year for 2008, rushed for 1,797 yards and 24 touchdowns and recording 48 tackles and two sacks for state semifinalist Licking Valley. Named a Super Prep Midwest Top 20 player, Klein advanced to state in wrestling as a sophomore and also was a baseball standout.

Mewhort, all-Ohio, all-Toledo City League, all-Toledo Blade and Detroit Free Press 'Best of the Midwest,' excelled at center, tackle and guard for St. John. A participant in the Under Armour All-America game, Mewhort was named on Super Prep Midwest's Top 25 list.

Klein: Spring game 'breathtaking'

COLUMBUS ? It may have only been a glorified scrimmage, but to Storm Klein it felt like a real game.

The former Licking Valley standout, who finished high school early so he could enroll at Ohio State in time to participate in spring football practice, got his first taste of what Buckeye football is all about during Saturday?s spring game.

A national record 95,722 fans were waiting for Klein and the Buckeyes as they ran onto the Ohio Stadium field, and for Klein, it was almost surreal.

?It was breathtaking,? Klein said. ?It?s something I won?t forget. ? I got chills when I ran onto the field, and was a neat thing for me and for my family.

?To have that many people here is remarkable, and for me, it felt like a real game.?

Klein played strong-side linebacker for the Gray squad ? which was led by quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Klein finding his niche on Ohio State defense

COLUMBUS ? As the days grow long and the weather heats up, high school seniors fight through a phenomenon called "senioritis."

According to Wikipedia, senioritis is "decreased motivation towards studies displayed by students nearing the end of their high school careers."

For Storm Klein and eight of his teammates, "senioritis" is the last thing on their minds. They are more worried about learning the play book, hitting the weight room, working with their position coach and getting through the lower level classes required for most college degree programs.

Since accepting the head coaching position at Ohio State, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel has encouraged a significant number of incoming recruits to secure the necessary number of high school credits to be able to graduate in December, enabling them to get a head start on their Ohio State football careers by moving to campus early.

They can get their feet wet with a few college classes, adjust to life away from home and in the dorms, and get a feel for what the next four (or five) years of their lives will entail.
