Klein staying fresh for second season
Lightened work load for back could mean winning formula for Valley

HANOVER -- Much has been made of Storm Klein's increased playing time on the defensive side of the ball.

While the Licking Valley junior has been another addition to an already terrorizing defense, Klein's offensive opportunities have been limited.

It is for good reason --the Panthers (8-1, 6-0) hope to have a long second season. Valley coach Randy Baughman, however, gave fans a sneak peek to what the playoff formula could be on Fridays in November.

Klein had a season-high 23 carries for 186 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the Panthers' 32-0 victory against visiting Newark Catholic (7-2, 5-1) to wrap up the Mid-State League-Ohio Division title.
"(Baughman) is always on me about getting the ball more," Klein said. "Other backs can get the ball 47 times, play on defense. Coach works on me like that, but he gave me kind of an idea."

Klein carried the ball on all five plays of Valley's opening drive, which covered 60 yards and ended in the end zone. On the first drive of the second half, Klein carried on 10 of the first 11 plays, leading to a Nick Phillips scoring run.

Klein's numbers might have been higher had he not missed a portion of the first half with what appeared to be a cramp or a strain in his calf.

In todays Advocate Coach Baughman says he expects Storm to be ready to go this Friday against West Branch. Last week he went from not playing at all on Tuesday to a game time decision Friday so the rest is doing its job. He told coach B several times Friday night he was ready when ever they needed him. Fortunately his back up had over 200 and 4 tds, and Storm was able to take the night off. I expect given another full week of rest Storm will be ready to get it on Friday.

WOOSTER The West Branch Warriors couldn't weather the storm.

Licking Valley running back Storm Klein lived up to his billing by bulldozing the Warriors for four touchdowns and 195 yards rushing to power the Panthers to a 35-21 victory in Friday's Division III high school football regional semifinal game at Follis Field. Licking Valley will play Northwest next Friday in a regional final.

"They're big and strong," West Branch head coach Bob Altenhof said. "I think we did a decent job. (Klein) had a couple of big runs that just killed us."

Indians caught by Storm

NEW PHILADELPHIA Licking Valley High School football coach Randy Baughman said he feared Northwest?s ?lightning? ? a speedy, skilled and diversified offense.

But when the moment for the game?s decisive play arrived Friday night, Baughman found he had something even better than lightning ? a Storm.

Junior running back Storm Klein powered into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with 2:49 remaining as Licking Valley outlasted Northwest, 21-17, in the Division III, Region 11 championship game at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium.

?They just made one more play than we did,? Northwest coach Vic Whiting said.

Licking Valley (12-1) moves into the state semifinals. Northwest (12-1) ties a school record for victories in a season.

Klein, a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder already committed to Ohio State, ran for a first down on fourth-and-1 from the Northwest 42 during the drive. Eleven plays later, Licking Valley faced fourth down a yard away from the end zone.

There was no debate as to the identity of the ballcarrier.

?If we would have called anything else, the linemen would have turned on me,? Baughman said. ?You have to go with your best.?

Northwest?s defense also knew what was coming, and for a moment, it appeared Klein was stopped short. The whistle never sounded, however, and Klein bulled his way over the right side and across the line.

?He was stopped,? Whiting said. ?We thought we had him down.?

FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MASSILLON, Ohio -- Josh Bailey's improbable run to the northwest corner of Paul Brown Tiger Stadium last night sent Licking Valley all the way to Canton.

Alongside Ohio State recruit Storm Klein for the first time this season, Bailey broke off a 65-yard touchdown run on third-and-13 with 25 seconds to play to give Licking Valley a 27-21 victory over Mentor Lake Catholic in a Division III state semifinal in front of 3,220 fans.

Licking Valley (13-1) will play for its first state title in an all-central Ohio final against Big Walnut (13-1) at 3 p.m. Friday in Canton Fawcett Stadium.

After Licking Valley trailed 14-7 at halftime, Klein ran for two touchdowns in the second half to give the Panthers a 21-14 lead with 10:35 left in the fourth quarter. He finished with 130 yards and his 27th and 28th touchdowns of the season.
