LB Raekwon McMillan (New England Patriots)

Reporters crawled to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the coldest day of the year Thursday for Ohio State's Fiesta Bowl Media Day. Urban Meyer met with the media in the team room for the first time since Ohio State found out they made the College Football Playoff on Dec. 4.

  • Meyer said Raekwon McMillan is "probably among the top two or three" players he's ever been around in terms of taking care of business: "I've had very few like that. From Day One when he walked on campus, he was a grown man."

Teams Grade Raekwon McMillan in the Mid-Rounds

There have been some draft pundits who projected Ohio State junior inside linebacker Raekwon McMillan to be a first-round pick, and a potentially high first-rounder entering the 2016 season. McMillan played well in 2015, totaling 119 tackles with 1.5 sacks and four passes broken up on the year, so some hype was understandable. However, McMillan hasn't been as impressive as a junior, and sources from multiple teams say they have given McMillan a third-round grade.

Sources question McMillan's pass-coverage ability for the NFL, as he has not impressed evaluators in defending the pass. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder is a quality run defender, but his limitations in pass coverage have many teams projecting him as coming off the field in nickel situations. NFL defenses are now operating out of the nickel around 70 percent of their snaps, so that is a huge chunk of playing time that McMillan is projected to be on the sideline. As a result, sources from multiple teams say they could see McMillan going off the board in the middle of the draft. One team thought he could go in the second, but they had a third-round grade on McMillan. One playoff team said they had a third- or fourth-round grade on him.

That is really surprising to me. Thought he would have mid-late 1st round projections.

He's been dogged for years by some who say he's "stiff" and makes his tackles too far down the field(slow to read).
I wonder if much of that is just the way he's been coached to play that position?
He'll test well probably and that could help some.
Would he come back?

If the early projections hold, I would have to imagine that he would return. I've read he's a 3rd/4th round projection. Maybe I'm biased, but I'd take Kwon in a heartbeat to play alongside Burfict (assuming he isn't suspended) in the 1st round of next year's draft.

I thought the same thing. Bengals keep improving their draft position lol but I would be thrilled to pick him up. LB is a huge need and you know that Kwon is going to be an excellent pro.

His ability to cover the amount of field that he does can only be matched by a handful of other LB's in the NFL currently. Burfict is one of those LB's. Can you imagine those two on the same team! Talk about taking some pressure off the secondary!

OHIO STATE’S RAEKWON MCMILLAN, JALYN HOLMES FORMED A LIFELONG FRIENDSHIP ON A RECRUITING VISIT — AT CLEMSON

78560_h.jpg,qitok=BPIHAPfM.pagespeed.ce.g4oDPu3xl7.jpg

Raekwon McMillan and Jalyn Holmes never intended for the conversation to go the way it did.

Yet there they were, a pair of highly-coveted uncommitted high school football prospects, sitting by themselves inside the Clemson practice facility in the summer of 2013 talking about anything and everything that comes with major college football recruiting.

Finally, after a bit of back-and-forth discussion, it hit both of them.

“We were talking, man, and we were talking about the things that weighed out and what was better and what was not,” McMillan recalled Wednesday. “We came to the conclusion like, ‘We’re up here talking about Ohio State when we were visiting Clemson.’”

And so began a friendship that figures to go on for a lifetime.

McMillan, a five-star linebacker prospect from Hinesville, Georgia, was one of the most sought after recruits in the 2014 class. He had offers from nearly every school in the country, but three stood out: Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.

Holmes was a four-star defensive end prospect from Norfolk, Virginia, who wasn’t exactly as highly-touted as McMillan but had a rather impressive offer list nonetheless. Ohio State, Clemson and Florida State were all after him.
