LB Pete Werner (New Orleans Saints)

Spitler was a big dude. When he went through McGuffie it wasn't really a surprise. Kinda shocked me how powerful Werner's tackle was. As I watched that last night, my first reaction was "geez, I hope that kid's alright". That was a haymaker.

This... the first thing out of my mouth was, "Oh... goodness. You can only hope he's alright."

While the hit was stellar and worthy of Tatum-esque praise, when Werner laid the hit in one direction, it caused the UNL player's head to snap back into the helmet of one of our other defenders. Have to go look at who it was. I think that the whiplash... actually... double whiplash, made it seem worse than what it may have been.

That said, thank God for the protective equipment they have now. A few years ago and that kid would have been DRT (dead right there)... and I'm not exaggerating by much. Frankly, with how things played out, I'm very thankful that everyone literally walked away from that play. Far worse has happened with far less contact.

PENN STATE QUOTEBOOK: CHRIS OLAVE AND K.J. HILL CATCH “HUGE” TOUCHDOWNS, J.K. DOBBINS WANTS “THE BIG ONE,” JEFF HAFLEY CALLS PETE WERNER UNDERRATED

Hafley and the defensive coaches stuck Pete Werner on tight end Pat Freiermuth for much of Saturday's game.

Though Freiermuth led the Nittany Lions with six catches for 40 yards, Hafley saw no issues with the coverage of the big-bodied target. Freiermuth didn't have a catch for more than 11 yards.

“(Werner) was matched up with (Freiermuth) at times, and I thought they had a really good plan,” Hafley said. “He caught the slant on him, caught an out route on him, but he didn't have any explosives on him. You know, the pop pass in the end zone, he's right there. Kid made a nice play. Tough situation for Pete. That didn't bother him. That's one of those, 'Hey, no problem, man.' Fuller was right there. Pete's right there. He's a good player. But 10 tackles for Pete. Guarded that guy most of the day. Played physical. Pete Werner's a great football player that in my mind is still underrated.”

Great game yesterday. It's a thankless job to guard a TE like Freiermuth because you're not going to shut him out. But he didn't let him get loose and that's what you need in big games. Werner is a key cog in this defense.

One of the things that made the defenses work 15 years ago was Bobby Carpenter's ability to cover a TE 1-on-1. Werner has that ability. Underrated athleticism.

Heard that. I think Pete played his best game in the S&G yesterday. Somewhat of an unsung hero with Young getting the headlines, but Werner was every bit as good on Saturday imo.

The scheme requires that Werner man-up and cover the TE - a lot. And Penn State was clearing targeting him as much as they could, and they clearly had limited success. I agree he played well.

Fick was a big fan of Pete

That’s why I didn’t get down on him last year when shit-for-brains was coaching him. I knew it wasn’t all Pete’s fault.

Pete also made a huge play vs ttun last year when he saved a td by ripping the ball out of their TE hands

Agreed and same goes for several of our LBs last year (Pete and Browning both stand out). But Pete has had a damn nice season, likes night and day different from last year.
