LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

Freeman got himself some notice this morning in Indy with his 40 times. He ran faster than both JL and Rey Malalullalggaua.

1st Run - 4.67

2nd Run - 4.70

Note that his shoulders are friggin huge. You can certainly see he is no stranger to the weights.

Running thru 2 linebacker drills thus far and Freeman's hips and flexability looks great. He had a more fluid transition from backpedaling to a front sprint - better than JL.

He looks like he was meant to stay on the outside as a LB.

Freeman looked awesome in the Directional Change drills. He failed to make the interception in another rill, but was smart and didnt hesitate (like most of the other prospects) to finish out the drill. He's working hard.

He needs to quit looking down at cones and bags, and just "feel" what is around him. Otherwise, the kid looks like a natural OLB, combine the Senior Bowl with the Combine, and his draft stock is rising. Im thinking 3rd round.

Update: Just completed the "Pass Drop & Hip Rotation" Drill. His stance was a bit high, but he didnt need to force and plant his foot to change direction and keep a high spped. He looked great, completed the catch and never quit. As I said earlier, he looks like he will be a good WLB on Sundays.

Update 2: In a drill of constant 45 degree turns, Freeman was highly praised by the commentators, Maylock saying "That was so good , I got into it.". He dropped his eyes to his feet once, but then returned 'em back to the QB. He was crisp on his foot work, his stance stayed wide and low. He performed well with making the interception and following through.

Final Update: On the last drill of the day for the 'Backers, Freeman looked okay. It was the Over/Under Arm Rip on the two bags. His 90 degree cut to the straight-line run on the finish wasnt too wide, but he didnt exude his power when hitting the bag; A lot of this can be contributed to fatigue. Unlike most other LB's, he did actually use his hands (other just nudged the bag with their shoulders).

Overall Freeman had the day he needed. I can certainly see him going late second early 3rd. He finished with the 8th best time in the 40 yard dash and looked crisp on his drills. In my opinion he had a better day than JL, but then again we are talking about two different LB positions. Freeman's stock is on the rise, hopefully he can follow it up with an outstanding pro day in Columbus in March.

Marcus Freeman has been in the top 10 in most drills for outside linebackers.

Marcus Freeman yesterday joined Brian Robiskie as Ohio State players who likely have made money at the NFL scouting combine.

Freeman's performances in almost every drill so far have been in the top 10 among fellow outside linebackers working out at Indianapolis.

He had the top linebacker performance in the 20-yard shuttle (4.12 seconds) and tied for first in the vertical jump (37 inches).

He also had the seventh-best 40-yard dash time, 4.74 seconds.

On Sunday, Freeman tied for the best bench press, doing 30 repetitions of 225 pounds.

Viewed as a third-round pick going into the combine, Freeman might have moved up a round.

OSU LB Marcus Freeman?s NFL stock on the rise
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Monday, February 23, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS ? The linebackers created a buzz with a strong performance at the NFL Scouting Combine on Monday. There were a number of solid performers in the group, but none better than Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, who solidified his draft status with a masterful performance. Curry came in as the top-ranked linebacker entering the draft.

That being said coming into the event a lot of hype was made about the three USC linebackers: Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews and how they were expected to perform before scouts. Although Trojan linebackers didn?t disappoint, there was another backer that stole the show. That was Ohio State outside linebacker Marcus Freeman, who turned in some impressive numbers without all the fanfare.

The 6-foot-1, 239-pound Freeman, a Wayne High School grad, let his performance do the talking as he matched the more highly touted linebackers blow for blow in their workouts.

40-Yard Dash

Freeman tied for seventh place with Cushing, running a 4.74 in the 40.

Bench Press

Freeman finished in a three-way tie for first place with Cushing and Kaluka Maiava (USC), banging out 30 reps of 225-pounds on the bench.

Vertical Leap

Freeman again finished in a three-way tie for first place this time with Curry and Zack Follett (Cal) posting a 37-inch vertical.

3-Cone Drill

Freeman finished in fourth place behind Cushing, Matthews and teammate James Laurinaitis posting a time of 6.98.

20-Yard Shuttle

Freeman stood alone in first place after showing catlike agility running a blistering 4.12 in the drill. The top time in this drill for running backs was 4.08. Another hometown product, Michigan State running back Javon Ringer completed the drill in 4.11.

Freeman placed in the top 10 or better in five of the seven events. He interviewed with nearly every NFL team and his stock is said to be on the rise.

Pro day: The "real" times
OK, we've got a pretty good handle on the 40 times from pro day today. The times I'm going to list here are a range, where most of the 29 teams had the players....it doesn't mean some teams didn't have a guy a few ticks faster (or slower), but these are the best, most reliable ranges we can give you:

MARCUS FREEMAN: 4.50 to 4.55. Wow. For a linebacker, just wow. That's first-day-of-the-draft speed, again, a full .2 better than Indy. One team had a 4.47, which means he could run down Jenkins?
