Grant came in at 6'1'' 232lbs...and to clarify my earlier post, I saw that when only about half of the LB's had been through their first attempt. I believe his 4.71 put him at 11/12th out of the 36 LB's invited. Not too shabby at all.

pretty good "quickness" numbers from him at the combine. 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle particularly. From the top performers page on nfl.com his 3 cone time (6.77) was top five-ish for any position. His 4.22 20-yard, while not quite as good, still would put him on the top performers list at any position.

At 6'1" and 230, big enough to play any LBer postion, I'd say that's pretty good. It will probably attract someone's attention. Especially a team that needs a backup linebacker/special teams guy.

Uh ... did you see his pick against NIU in the opener in 2006?

Grant's alleged speed was refuted a whole 25 minutes into his Buckeye career. Now, he's no Ryan Mallet with the wheels, of course, but who is?

OTOH, I guess a 4.71 does make him one/one-hundredths of a second faster than an overweight, hungover Maurice Clarett. :bonk:

Yes. That was also 2 years ago(meaning he's had time to improve his speed) and on a terrible playing surface. Even if we knew he wasn't quite the speedster he was billed as coming out of JC, it was supposed to be what gets him noticed by NFL scouts.

Most years there are double-digit Ohio State players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. However, this time around, only three former Buckeyes made the trip. Defensive end Vernon Gholston stole the show with his performance, while offensive lineman Kirk Barton and linebacker Larry Grant turned in solid performances. Barton was limited in what he could do because of a knee injury.

According to one of our sources, who spoke with several insiders after the Combine, former Ohio State linebacker Larry Grant surprised many scouts with his overall athletic ability and might have, ultimately, secured a spot in the middle rounds of the draft....N.F.L. teams already liked his special teams production at Ohio State, but his performance in the agility drills (3-cone and 20-yd shuttle) and 4.71 40 at 235 pounds in Indianapolis last weekend has really forced many teams to take a closer look at him.

Larry Grant wasn't projected to be drafted before the NFL combine, but the Ohio State linebacker seems to have improved his stock. Grant finished among the top 10 in several linebacker drills -- the three-cone drill (6.77 seconds, third), the 20-yard shuttle (4.22 seconds, fourth) and the vertical (31 feet, 5 inches, eighth). He ran a relatively slow 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which agent Nate Haber says put him around 11th or 12th for linebackers.

Gholston not the only Buckeye to impress

It was onto Columbus for Lewis and company who attended Ohio State's Pro Day on Friday. DE Vernon Gholston reportedly stole the show at the workout, but underrated LB Larry Grant did nothing to disappoint the teams in attendance. In fact, Lewis didn't leave the workout until he talked to the linebacker.

Grant turned in a pretty good performance himself. He posted times of 6.77 seconds in the 3-cone drill and 4.22 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle, both times placing him in the top five for all linebackers at the Combine.

But after running in the low 4.7s in the 40-yard dash, Grant felt he had a little more to prove. So he came to his pro day on Friday and ran between a 4.58 and 4.63, according to most scouts.

"I was happy with my agility drills in Indianapolis, but I wanted to show that I was faster in the 40," Grant said Friday after the pro day. "I'll take the 4.58 any day. I'm pretty excited. I had a lot of fun."

After running the 40-yard dash, Grant participated in linebacker and defensive end drills with consensus top-five pick, Gholston. Reportedly, teams were very impressed with Grant's body movement and agility.

Grant's agent, Nate Haber, was very pleased with the outcome. "Larry did well at the Combine and he continued on that success here today," said Haber. "Teams got a chance to watch him up-close. I think his athleticism may have surprised some people."
