LB Larry Grant (Official Thread)

I am very happy for Larry! He's worked his tail off and deserves this chance. His familiarity with the area has gotta be an asset. I agree that we're most likely to see him on special teams.....where he's been of most interest to scouts.

Niners fill out draft class with size, depth

Without big names, Nolan says needs filled

SANTA CLARA - Larry Grant grew up in Northern California and moved around the area until going to high school in Georgia. He returned to San Francisco for junior college and then went to Ohio State, where he played in two national title games.
Grant completed his circle Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers chose him in the seventh round to fill out a draft class lacking big names, but full of the depth coach Mike Nolan says he needs. Grant, a linebacker who's expected to be a big part of the 49ers' special-teams units this year, was thrilled to hear he's headed home to the Bay Area. His father still lives in San Francisco, and the Santa Rosa-born former running back attended Foothill High School in Sacramento before moving to Georgia with his brother.

Larry Grant Come on Down

Ohio State outside linebacker and former City College of San Francisco star Larry Grant was the 49ers' 7th and final pick. Grant was the former California defensive juco player of the year in 2005.

At Ohio State last year, Grant played all three linebacker positions and blocked three kicks. In 2006 at City College, he blocked six. Between Grant, Keith Lewis and Manny Lawson, the opposition shouldn't get a kick off.

Larry Grant has some Bay Area connections.

He started one game as a junior at Ohio State against Bowling Green in which he made 18 tackles and blocked a kick, assisted on a sack, picked off a pass and had a 9-yard return on the kick he blocked.

As a senior he started at outside linebacker, notched five sacks and had 9.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Grant is listed as being born in San Francisco, but he says he was born in Santa Rosa. He lived in Sacramento and attended Foothill High there as a freshman and senior and, in between, went to school in Georgia, while he stayed with his older brother.

Coach Mike Nolan envisions Grant playing special teams and competing with Jeff Ulbrich and Dontarrious Thomas at "ted" linebacker.

When Grant was asked about being a 49er, he said, "It's a real blessing, man, I'm happy. I was a diehard, life-long 49ers' fan. So this is the best situation I've ever been in."

Nolan's Wrap-up Thoughts
"I believe it was a good draft because we had positions of need and we were able to address those at the same time, so when it came time to take the best player on the board, we did come out fairly well most of the time all the way through to the seventh round. We did talk about inside backer at some point and hopefully Larry Grant is a guy who will compete for that position. He comes from a very good program, obviously, Ohio State, and he was a very effective player. I felt good about yesterday, and I feel good about where we ended today."

Is Grant big enough to be a Ted?

"Sure, he's big enough. He has a sturdy body. He's not huge. He's not as big as some Teds I would agree. Dontarrious probably looks more like it than anyone else, but again our key is to get the best football player on the field, so if he is one of the better linebackers, he can get that job. If we have to go 4-3 to cover him up because he isn't big enough, we can do that. The issue with the 3-4 is that in a straight up 3-4, you need bigger inside backers because they have to pound with the guards all day long."

Does Grant have skills in special teams?

"Yes, special teams coach Al Everestwas very excited. He was still selling him after we picked him."

49ers Minicamp: Grant didn't mind when big brother was watching him
By Matthew Barrows - [email protected]

SANTA CLARA ? When Larry Grant left Sacramento as a high school sophomore to live with his older brother in Georgia, he thought he would have it easy.

There would be no more parents and grandparents nagging him about grades and schoolwork. He would have all the television he could watch.

Grant, however, quickly discovered that LeSean Woods, 12 years Grant's senior and with two sons of his own, had other plans for his little brother.

"I thought I was going to paradise. I thought I had it easy," Grant said. "But as soon as school started, he straightened me out real fast. He almost stopped me from playing in a football game one week. He scared me straight. He took my phone, took away the TV, took all the privileges I had. All I did was study."

Q&A with LB Larry Grant
June 05, 2008

Enjoy this 49ers.com Q&A with the 49ers rookie linebacker Larry Grant. Grant joined the 49ers as a seventh-round pick out of Ohio State.

Q: You played with Vernon Gholston at Ohio State, a top ten pick. How did playing with him help elevate your game?
A: It was great to be around him, as well as a bunch of guys who have gone on to the NFL the last few years. There were even a bunch of other guys who could have probably gone pretty high this year, but they decided to stay for their senior years. So, being around a group of guys like that pushes you to be better than you are, but I expected to win every week, regardless of who is around me. I wanted to win and I think we all shared that attitude at Ohio State, and we knew that we had to perfect our game in practice in order to get it done.

Q: I read that you moved your family out to Ohio State with you? What made you decide to do that?
A: Well, I have a big family and am the youngest of seven, so I didn?t move the whole family out. I just moved my mother, my sister and my nephew out to Columbus with me. My mother was living in between St. Louis and California, and my sister and my nephew were in California. I just felt that my family deserved better and that maybe I could help, and I did the best I could for them. They are actually still out there and will be until July. They love it. My mother loved the tradition at Ohio State. She was a mother to everyone on the team.

In going back over my notes from yesterday, I realized I failed to mention one important thing about rookie linebacker Larry Grant. I wrote about how he appeared to be really struggling during individual drills at the beginning of practice. Position coach Mike Singletary was on him pretty hard. What I failed to write was that long after practice had concluded - probably at least 30 minutes - I saw Singletary and Grant leave the field together engaged in conversation. The professor remained long after class for some one-on-one tutoring with the pupil.
