LB Kourt Williams II (Official Thread)

8. DB Kourt Williams

Initially the question on Kourt Williams was where does he play. Is he a linebacker? Is he a “bullet”? Is he a defensive back? The staff has settled on him being a safety - at least for now. And Williams has done well including being one of the first to have his black stripe removed. We will see how many game reps Williams gets at safety, but I do see him at least breaking in on special teams.

a10jones: Was Kourt Williams in line to play an important role whether that was as an important backup or in someone that was going to be in the starting rotation? Feel like that loss could hurt, depth wise. Heard he was doing well in camp.

Helwagen: Yes, I think Kourt was going to play a role, probably as a backup safety and key player on special teams. Not sure he was going to move ahead of Proctor or Hooker as a starter this year, but you also want depth in case of injuries, Covid positives etc. We heard same things that he was heavy in the plans for this year and certainly will be for the future.

Williams has never played a snap yet for the Buckeyes, so it might be premature to assume he could have fixed the problems by himself. But he definitely appeared to be pushing for more than just a complementary role before his ACL injury in training camp, and the fact that he couldn’t even try to be part of the solution wound up looming large for Ohio State.

“I’ll be surprised if he’s not a captain when he’s here,” Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said last offseason. “I’ve said that to him and his parents a million times. They’re probably tired of hearing me say that. He was a state champ in California, which is not easy to do. He comes from a great program, same program as Wyatt Davis, and the coaches at [St. John] Bosco do an unbelievable job.
