LB Jonathon Cooper (2nd Team All American, Denver Broncos)

SKULL SESSION: FOUR-STAR QB FLIPS FROM MICHIGAN STATE, ZONE-6 VERSATILITY, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF JONATHON COOPER

OL' JON COOP KEEPS HAMMERING AWAY.
Nick Bosa and Chase Young will get the hype this preseason, which is fine because it's not really hype if players meet or exceed expectations.

Both players are testaments to Meyer's national recruiting strategy. Just don't forget about another defensive end who came to Columbus from just outside the 270 outerbelt.

Folks call him Jonathon Cooper.

From cleveland.com:

The path is finally clear for Cooper to have a substantial role on the defensive line. Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes and Sam Hubbard have gone on to the NFL. Nick Bosa is back, and Young is moving up too. Those two and Cooper form the rotation now. They'll try to sort out a fourth guy in camp (Tyreke Smith and Jashon Cornell are the two guys to watch there).

But Cooper is in now, which is a long time coming for a former high four-star prospect. His slow trek to this point is less about him and more about what was in front in from. Now Cooper gets to remind people that he was a borderline top-30 national player in the 2016 recruiting class.

Not sure what's more absurd, a borderline top-30 commitment having to wait years to get his chance or that he's still only the third-most hyped player at his position.

Defenses can't double team Bosa, Young, and Cooper. If Cooper appears in the Rushmen package, and right now there's no reason to think he won't, he should be able to abuse interior linemen with speed.

I've been a fan of Cooper since he signed. Some say I was the first Buckeye fan to say he would be good. I'm not sure they're correct but I was at least No. 2 or 3.

FIVE OHIO STATE PLAYERS WHO MIGHT BE OVERLOOKED ENTERING THE 2018 SEASON

JONATHON COOPER, DE

Almost all the hype around Ohio State’s defensive ends entering the 2018 season has surrounded Bosa and Young, and understandably so. Bosa is already arguably the best defensive end in college football, and Young certainly appears to have the tools to play at that same level.

Yet even though Bosa is already a star and Young is widely expected to become one, defensive line coach Larry Johnson is going to continue to rotate at least four players at the defensive end position. So much like last year – when the Buckeyes had four star defensive ends in Bosa, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes – the opportunity remains open for defensive ends other than Bosa and Young to also play huge roles this year.

The strongest candidate to take advantage of that opportunity is junior Jonathon Cooper, who will likely split snaps about evenly with Young this year after seeing occasional playing time over the past two seasons. While Cooper wasn’t the composite five-star recruit that Bosa and Young were, he was close (No. 33 overall in 2016), and he too has the potential to be an impact player both as a pass-rusher and in the run game.

SKULL SESSION: OHIO STATE GREAT AGAINST THE SPREAD, OHIO STATE'S LOOMING OFFENSIVE TACKLE DECISION, AND JONATHAN COOPER OVERLOOKED

THE OTHER FIVE-STAR DEFENSIVE END.
People forget Ohio State has a five-star defensive end not named Chase Young or Nick Bosa, and with the way the Buckeyes like to rotate defensive ends, there's a strong chance Jonathan Cooper will spend his Saturdays in the opposition's backfield as well.

From Alex Gleitman of Bucknuts.com:

The 6-foot-4, 257-pounder, who arrived from local Gahanna (OH) Lincoln as a 5-star per 247Sports, has flashed when given the opportunity during the first half of his career in Scarlet and Gray, but he hasn't really had the chance to get extended or truly meaningful minutes thus far, with players like Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, and Nick Bosa ahead of him on the depth chart.

As a freshman in 2016, Cooper played in 6 games with 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. Last year, he had 15 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 QB hit, and 1 fumble recovery in 14 games of action. In watching him, his quick first step, initial burst, and ability to get to the quarterback are apparent, and should be enough to get fans excited about what he could bring to the table as a full-time player in 2018.

But despite Hubbard, Holmes, and Lewis all leaving for the NFL, that's not exactly the case. With Bosa coming back, and a ton of excitement around Chase Young, who registered 19 tackles and 3.5 sacks as a true freshman in 2017, Cooper has become somewhat of an afterthought when fans, media members, and other analysts talk about the Buckeyes' defensive line this coming season.

It's true, I jumped aboard the Chase Young bandwagon as soon as I saw the 17-year-old in pads, but I wouldn't say I've forgotten about Cooper. He was one of the top pass rushers in the country coming out of high school and was nearly unblockable in a one-on-one.

A third-down package of Nick Bosa, Chase Young, Dre'Mont Jones and Jonathan Cooper honestly seems like a violation of NPT.

Ohio State football | Jonathon Cooper gets his chance at defensive end

26376114282_c82a0ee264_o.jpg

Jonathon Cooper enrolled two years ago at Ohio State from Gahanna as a five-star recruit.

He went from big fish to a guppy in a loaded pond. Ohio State has been absolutely stacked at defensive end. He handled it well, in part because of his naturally upbeat personality and faith that if he worked hard, his time would come.

“It wasn’t hard per se,” Cooper said. “I just knew every day I had to bring it. Every single day I had to give it all I had and just keep getting better season by season. Now I have a chance where I can really show the world what I can do.”

Cooper started the Buckeyes’ first three games at defensive end this year along with preseason All-American Nick Bosa, ahead of budding star Chase Young. With Bosa injured for the Tulane game on Saturday and quite possibly beyond that, the junior is ready for an even bigger role.

“The way I view it, Nick Bosa is Nick Bosa,” Cooper said. “But our motto as a defensive line has always been ‘next man up.’ Guys just have to step up now. I feel the entire defensive line is going to step up and not miss a beat.

“I feel I’m going to step up my game and take it to another level, keep going as hard as I can every Saturday and get better.”

Cooper has had a quiet year statistically. He has been credited with five tackles and one sack, though he didn’t play much in the second half of blowouts against Oregon State and Rutgers.

“He’s played well,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said. “The production may be not so big, but he’s really played and done his job well. I think with more opportunities that will lead to more production.”

Cooper agrees.

COOPER, HARRISON LEAVE GAME EARLY
Ohio State linebacker Malik Harrison intercepted a two-point conversion pass attempt by Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey in the end zone during the third quarter of Saturday’s game, and he nearly had a shot to return it for two points the other way. Harrison ran the ball back along the sideline past the 40-yard line before being tripped up by Indiana left tackle Coy Cronk.

That effort, however, might have come at a cost not only to Harrison, but also to one of his fellow defensive starters.

Harrison did not return to the game after that play, and neither did defensive end Jonathon Cooper, who was also tripped up running down the field on Harrison’s return and landed awkwardly, rolling in the ground in apparent pain before walking off the field.

Both players were carted back to the locker room before the end of the third quarter.

It was not clear what either of their injuries were, and Meyer did not specify after the game, saying only that both players were “still being evaluated.”

I don't mean to sound negative on Jonathan Cooper, who I believe is an excellent player, but I'm not sure we're not better off finding out more about young players like Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday. I think we're just fine with those guys.

I suspect this week is a good one to let the pups run. Get everyone back as much as possible for Purdue and the final third of the season. Rest the guys who are dinged as much as possible this week.
