LB Gabe "Special" Powers (Official Thread)

Now a 5 star per Bill Kurelic.

POWERS A FIVE-STAR
A few minutes before Gabe Powers announced his commitment to Ohio State on Eleven Warriors' Facebook Live feed, Powers' father, Mike, joked that the younger Powers should be introduced as the No. 1 outside linebacker in the 2022 class.

At the time, on Aug. 1, Powers was ranked No. 47 overall and No. 2 at OLB in the nation in the composite rankings, though he was No. 1 at OLB in the 247Sports rankings. So, as Gabe told his dad, “They can't do that. They have to go by the composite.”

Well, we're going by the composite rankings now, and Powers is ranked the No. 1 OLB in America. In 247Sports' latest rankings update for the 2022 class, Powers was rated as one of 36 five-star prospects in the composite, and that billing came with a move into the No. 34 overall spot and No. 1 OLB spot.

POWERS FORCES TWO TURNOVERS
While Ballard is working his way to a possible fifth star, the Buckeyes' top-ranked 2022 outside linebacker commit Gabe Powers is already there.

Powers, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder ranked No. 1 at OLB and No. 31 overall, is the top-ranked player in Ohio's 2022 cycle, and on Friday he was able to display that skillset.

The junior looked brilliant on a pair of plays in which he sprinted over to step in front of a post route for an interception, and he later showed great instincts by punching the ball out of a receiver's hands to force a fumble.

Powers is one part of the three-man group that is the best linebackers class in the nation in 2022. He may end up at defensive end down the line if his body transitions that way, but if he stays at outside linebacker he looks the part of a guy who can play in coverage in the flats and the middle of the field.

  • currently 235 lbs
  • expects to hit 245 lbs by the start of his senior season—consuming 8,000 calories per day
  • teams avoided his side of field and he was frustrated by how that limited the action he saw in games
  • growing in confidence on and off the field
  • ~100 texts a day in the 2022 class chat (he’s one of the least active)
  • Washington/Day still view him as an outside LB but he is open to moving to DE
  • teams still recruit him, with Georgia Tech pushing the hardest
  • mentions Zach Rice as a player being targeted in the class
  • looks forward to competing at Ohio State, playing for a championship, and making it to the NFL
  • values staying in Marysville versus transferring to a national HS program—expects to compete for a state title
