Powers’ Friday night signing came in contrast to the other 17 players who signed with Ohio State during the early signing period, all of whom sent in their National Letters of Intent by 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Anyone who knows Powers, though, already knew that his delay was nothing to worry about – because after all, he’s been dreaming of playing for Ohio State his whole life.

“That’s always been the goal since the day I was born,” Powers said of playing for Ohio State. “We’ve always been Ohio State fans, our whole family.”

Even so, Powers said Friday that it still hadn’t quite sunk in that his dream of wearing the scarlet and gray is about to come true.

“It’s a blessing, but it’s surreal almost,” Powers said. “It hasn’t truly set in, and it won’t until I’m there, but I’m very excited to be a Buckeye.”

Over the next couple of weeks, Knowles will continue to divvy up reps at linebacker – where Ohio State also has Reid Carrico and Gabe Powers on scholarship – as much as possible to see what all of his linebackers can do and who he can trust to play significant snaps when Ohio State opens its season against Notre Dame on Sept. 3. Ultimately, however, Knowles is only going to play the linebackers who have shown him they truly belong on the field.

After entering the program as an early enrollee last winter, Powers didn't log any defensive snaps during his first regular season in Columbus, but made special teams appearances against Toledo and Wisconsin in the first four games.

At Marysville, Powers earned Gatorade Player of the Year and USA TODAY Player of the Year honors in the state of Ohio after leading his team to the regional finals of the high school playoffs this past season. Powers did it all for the Monarchs, playing on offense, defense and special teams, but he's long been pegged as a promising linebacker prospect at the college level.

GABE POWERS PREPARED TO PROVIDE DEPTH AT LINEBACKER FOR OHIO STATE AFTER “HUGE JUMP” IN 2023​

Gabe Powers has made a habit of flying under the radar thus far in his Ohio State career. That trend is continuing into 2024.

With Will linebacker being the lone spot left to compete for on the Buckeyes’ defense, Powers is slated to back up Cody Simon at the Mike position while five-star prospects C.J. Hicks and Sonny Styles battle to start in the role vacated by Steele Chambers.

That doesn’t mean Powers isn’t powering up his skill set behind the scenes.

“You didn't see it because he didn't play a lot in his games, but in our opinion, Gabe, the second half of the season, what we see in practices, is probably one of the most complete guys,” defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said. “He really was.”

Entering his third season at Ohio State, Powers is accelerating his growth track as he prepares to be one of the Buckeyes’ top options off the bench at its most central of defensive positions.

“I've definitely developed mentally, that part of the game,” Powers said. “I think I still need to work on, formations-wise, plays on offense. It's a huge part of linebacker. A lot of people think linebackers just set the defense and play, but you also have to know a lot about what the offense is gonna do and be the quarterback of the defense.”
