COLUMBUS ? A new face might be on the field this weekend for Ohio State's defense.
Signs are pointing to linebacker Etienne Sabino playing on Saturday at Minnesota. Senior cornerback Chimdi Chekwa said Sabino's name is on the depth chart at linebacker and senior defensive end Cameron Heyward said, "Having Sabino back is definitely a great thing to have."
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound junior has planned all season to redshirt and return next year with two seasons of eligibility remaining. But with linebacker Ross Homan nursing an ankle injury, the Buckeyes are thinner than normal at linebacker.
The depth chart distributed to the media on Tuesday did not include Sabino's name, but Chekwa said, "I think I looked at the depth chart and saw his name up there."
Coach Jim Tressel earlier in the day did not mention the topic at his luncheon meeting with the media.
"I was a little bit surprised," Chekwa said. "But then again, we've got guys banged up. 'Bino is a great player. He's also a great special teams player. His help would be a help to the team."
A two-time letter-winner, the U.S. Army high school All-American was primarily used on special teams. He entered both the spring and fall as the starter at Sam linebacker, but was displaced at that position by Andrew Sweat. Homan's injury has moved Sweat to the Will.
"With his talent and athleticism, having him on the field is a big difference," Heyward said. "If he does play, we're going to welcome him back. We haven't really gotten into that, but if he does, we're ready."
