LB Dorian Bell (transfer to Duquesne)

ESPN - Barkley, Murray top seniors at Nike 7ON - Football Recruiting

Dorian Bell, 6-0, 230
LB, Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway

Bell shows up very well on film, dominated the NIKE camp at Penn State and had another strong performance in Oregon. He's a high-motor player who plays sideline to sideline and showed very good cover skills at the event.

Bell runs well, has good field awareness and can close on the ball. His last few steps are explosive; it's scary to think what he might have done to some players in this event with the pads on. We always knew Bell was very good coming forward and attacking the line of scrimmage, but his ability to drop back and turn and run with an opposing running back was also solid. He even surprised a bit lining up at receiver and made some big catches down the field. If Bell continues to work hard and truly commits himself to the game, he'll be as good as he wants to be.

I just love Brown and Bell! Two great kids. Just imagine these guys on the same team with TP and the other big time kids.

I hear you. Amidst the mass amounts of commits we were receiving, it was taking some time for it all to sink in on how good this class really is. Good to hear all the positive reports.

Gateway star Bell focused on winning

Dorian Bell is glad he has been able to focus on football and family this summer -- not the mailman.

Since the senior all-state linebacker at Gateway made a verbal commitment to Ohio State in April, the waves of recruiting letters that had been crashing in his mailbox have started to recede, and Bell has enjoyed his offseason without the pressure of facing a life-altering choice.

"Once he made his (college) decision, you could see the freedom and relaxation in his spirit," Gateway coach Terry Smith said. "I can just tell the difference between him and some of our kids in the past who have waited to make their decisions."

Blue Chip Chat with ... Dorian Bell

SCHOOL: Gateway
POSITION: RB-LB
HEIGHT: 6-1
WEIGHT: 225
THE SKINNY: Coach Terry Smith calls him the "best football player to come from Gateway ever." Some scouting services rank Bell among the top linebackers in the country. As a junior, had 131 tackles, including 25 for losses. Also had 11 sacks. Will add halfback to his chores this season after playing tight end last year.
COLLEGE TALK: Had more than 30 scholarship offers from schools across the country, but made verbal commitment to Ohio State in April.
YOU'RE GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS THE NO. 1 PLAYER IN THE WPIAL. DO YOU HAVE TO LIVE UP TO THAT? I just have to play to my potential and show everybody how better I am this year.
HOW ARE YOU BETTER? Just in my cutting ability and not running so high. Our coaches have taught me to run lower. And I think I'm reading things better on defense and getting to the ball quicker.

ESPN - Te'o, Telfort hold down top spots in 2009 OLB rankings - Football Recruiting

Te'o and Jenkins are both top-10 overall prospects in our recently released ESPNU 150 and currently are two of the most coveted, undecided defenders in the country. Dorian Bell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) possesses a similar ability to disrupt the offense's game plan, holds the label of being the top-rated player in his respective state, but is different because he made his commitment several months ago. The future Buckeye has already packed on impressive size from a year ago, when he terrorized opponents with his elite explosiveness and first-step quickness off the edge. He has game-changing closing speed, burst on the perimeter and is the type of defender Big Ten offensive coordinators will need to game plan around. Bell is a fierce hitter, and a kid whose motor never gears down on the football field.

G East: A runner-up last season, Gators don't plan to settle for second Thursday, August 21, 2008
By Jim Rodenbush, Tri-State Sports & News Service
Gateway advanced to the WPIAL Class AAAA title game in 2007, losing to Central Catholic, 35-34, in a memorable overtime contest at Heinz Field.
Gators coach Terry Smith believes the outcome could be different in 2008.
"This team should contend for the WPIAL championship," Smith said of his Gators.
Smith's optimism has everything to do with numbers -- 21 seniors, seven returning starters on offense and eight on defense.
"Both offensive and defensive lines return in tact," he said. "We will be very good up front on both sides of the ball."

Q&A with Gateway's Dorian Bell
By The Tribune-Review
Sunday, August 24, 2008

Dorian Bell, Gateway, senior, linebacker

Q: The WPIAL probably has rules against this, but if you could have any National Football League player on your team who would it be and what do you think he would bring to your team?

A: Michael Vick (former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, but now serving a jail sentence on a dog-fighting conviction). I?d put him at running back and let him go.

Q: If you could have two tickets to any sporting event in the world, which would it be and who would you invite to accompany you?

A: I?d go to a Steelers game and I would take my father (Joel Bell) with me.

Q: You are a five-star recruit and you are headed to Ohio State next season, but if you weren't a football player, what would be your dream job?

A: I?d like to be a high school football coach and be good at golfing.

Q: Maybe we can turn you into a comic book hero, so if you could have one supernatural power, what would it be?

A: To be the fastest person in the world.

Q: If you could meet anyone dead or alive and sit down to dinner and conversation, who would it be and what would you say?

A: (Former heavyweight boxing champion) Muhammad Ali, because he?s just the greatest of all-time.

The walls of Gateway head football coach and athletic director Terry Smith's office are adorned with framed pictures of all the players who have gone on to play Division I college football since he took the helm in 2002.

Under Smith, more than 20 players have earned that distinction, including cornerback Justin King, who starred at Penn State and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The storied legacy isn't lost on younger players who arrive at Gateway with dreams of joining King and co. on the wall. And seniors Dorian Bell and Corey Brown were no different when they entered the program in the fall of 2005.
