I'll go on record and say I think it's a mistake. He needs more size if he wants to make an immediate impact at the next level. I hope to be proven wrong and that Darron has a long career in the NFL. But it's a production league and you see time and time again that teams will cast a guy off if he doesn't produce early.
I have faith in Darron's work ethic and character though so he has a chance to overcome some of those limitations.
Smaller LBs who are almost more LB/S combos and who can cover are becoming more and more valuable. Shaq Thompson, Deone Buchanon, Jaquiski Tartt are all examples of that LB/S combo guys who are primarily coverage guys who were drafted late 1st or early 2nd over the past 2 years. It depends on what team and scheme drafts him, but I think a 4-3 team in the late 1st or early 2nd (Cinci, Minnesota, Dallas, Miami) could draft him and he could come in and make an immediate impact as a sub-package cover LB.
Yep. In fact, Lee may be a smidge bigger:Pretty much the same size as Shazier, who got a guaranteed $9M 1st-round contract and has 80 tackles, 3 sacks in his pro sophomore season. This is today's NFL linebacker - so I expect him to do well.
Hintity hint hint Malik Harris?"Darron Lee, someone posted a picture of a skinny-neck quarterback from New Albany," Urban Meyer said Jan. 7. "Now (he's) going to the NFL."
