Ohio State gets oral committment from St. Vincent-St. Mary's Dante Booker
Tim Rogers, The Plain Dealer, May 24, 2013
St. Vincent-St. Mary linebacker Dante Booker would have begun his senior season as one of the most heavily recruited high school players in the country.
The 6-4, 220-pound junior stopped that frenzy before it started -- or at least curtailed it considerably -- when he made an oral committment to attend Ohio State.
Just because Booker has orally pledged his love for OSU does not mean other suitors will stop calling.
SVSM coach Dan Boarman said Booker had narrowed his choices to OSU and Notre Dame after hearing from practically every major school in the country.
"The process has become very draining at this point," said Boarman. "But Dante did all the right things. He made his visits -- I can't tell you how many -- and he talked to many people."
One of those that Booker spoke with was former teammate Doran Grant, who figures prominently in OSU's secondary plans for 2014.
"I know that Doran was very helpful," Boarman said.
Booker did not return messages left by The Plain Dealer.
Boarman said Booker has remained true to his workout regimen and is diligently preparing for next season, when the Irish will attempt to win a second straight state title.
"Dante puts the work in," Boarman said. "He does what needs to be done. With his frame I think he could add 20 or 25 pounds and still be slender."
Booker was a Plain Dealer All-Star and the defensive co-player of the year after helping the Irish win the Division III state championship. During the regular season he was in on 72 tackles, with eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also had six sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and seven passes deflected.
Booker, whose father, also named Dante, was a standout at Ellet and had an outstanding career at Auburn, is the ninth pledge in Ohio State's 2014 recruiting class, and the third linebacker, a position the Buckeyes didn't fill in last year's recruiting class until late in the process.
