just curious, if he was only gonna play special teams this year, why not just red shirt him?

seems like a wasted year to me.

I've been asking this question to myself all year because I honestly didn't even think he was a huge difference maker on special teams...

One year coaching staff..

...and this is sort of where I've been leaning.

You can't say this was exclusive to this coaching staff. Andrew Sweat played strictly special teams as a frosh and never redshirted. Sabino didn't redshirt until his would be junior year. You need athletes like this on special teams as underclassmen.

Maybe they expected him to rise to the occasion such as Shazier did and it just didnt happen. Once the redshirt was burned, makes no sense to sit him on the bench. At least he got his letter and some experience. If he's as good as everyone says he is, he'll be leaving after his Jr year anyway, no?

After how bad our special teams was last season, I can't be too upset that we burned his redshirt for special teams. This year was a lot better on the ST's side of things in my opinion.

Minus that damn blocked XP vs Purdue...... AAAAHHHHHHHH :mad1:

Just saw that he had two tackles on the season, and I can only actually remember one of them.

It's pretty obvious he should have redshirted. They literally said "Yeah... maybe we should have put him at SAM instead" in the middle of the season because he just couldn't seem to get the defense down, which isn't a knock on him or anything, it just takes a little longer for some guys.

I realize there was a lack of depth at LB this year (moving Rod Smith over), but still... it's a shame he pretty much wasted a year of eligibility. And it's not like he was some special teams demon either, where a lot times that's where freshman spend their first years at and make big contributions. I just don't see the payoff for a few special teams appearances.

Two comments about redshirting:

(1) If the coaches think that a kid is going to leave for NFL after three years anyway, then there's no point in redshirting him. You might as well get something out of him in year one, even if it's only two tackles on special teams.

(2) If part of the coaches' sales pitch to a kid is early playing time, then it's pretty hard to redshirt him unless the kid subsequently asks to be redshirted.

FIFY. They don't have to go early to make the redshirt pointless. The redshirt year only helps the team in terms of eligibility if a guy comes back for the 5th year.

Agree with the second part, but we don't know anything about that.

As far as the first part, of course it makes no sense to have someone sit the bench and redshirt their first year if they can contribute to the team right away. But... he really didn't contribute. If a guy can't find his way onto the field as a highly touted freshman, especially with the depth they had at LB, it seems like a strech to say he's going to end up leaving early as a junior. Of course it's happened before, but I don't think they were going off his high school film and saying... "Well, this guy'll probably declare early for the draft anyway... he is a 5 star recruit afterall!"

I remember hearing all of this stuff about how Sabino was only going to be here for 3 seasons and was a lock as a first round pick. But the coaching staff knows better than me (obviously) and I'm guessing they burned his redshirt for a reason. If he locks down a starting spot next year and plays great, then eh... it didn't really matter. But if it's another Sabino situation where it takes 4 years for the light to finally come on (and it's still not completely on), then the lack of redshirts a little puzzling.

Then they can offer a red shirt to him later on like they did Etienne.

How about Jeremy Cash? He played on 1 punt return and lost the whole season. He and his family wanted a redshirt. They wanted the extra year for his education.:

What? Cash played in like 4 games. They switched his number after Colorado once he got bumped up to the starting punt unit.

Gambrell only played in two games but that's because he hurt his arm, he'll get this year back.
