Usually, when a player makes two key interceptions to help his team win a big game on the road, you'd think it was a typical game-changing cornerback that did the trick.

This time, it was an atypical linebacker.

Ohio State's James Laurinaitis had his first two interception game Saturday at Washington, both coming at key times during the Buckeyes' 33-14 win over the Huskies. His first came on a third-and goal for the Huskies on the Ohio State 5-yard line with the Buckeyes leading, 3-0. The second came at his own 22 with the Buckeyes defending a 17-7 lead in the second half.

He earned co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance, which sealed the Buckeyes' 3-0 start and gave coach Jim Tressel his 200th career victory.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

During an interview this week with The Dispatch, James Laurinaitis' father, Joe, offered an unsolicited opinion that he wouldn't be surprised if his son returned to Ohio State next season.

The gist of Dad's appraisal went like this: James -- a junior who won the Nagurski Award, given to the nation's top defensive player, last year -- really likes it at Ohio State, likes the coaches, likes what fellow linebacker A.J. Hawk did by sticking around and is "kind of a traditionalist," all of which makes it possible that he won't bolt for the NFL as some think. And as Dad said, "It's no secret where he's ranked."

There aren't a lot of NFL mock drafts yet, but a sample of a few out there had Laurinaitis going in the top half of the first round. Frank Cooney's NFL Draft Scout had Laurinaitis ranked No. 1 out of 59 inside linebackers and the third player to be taken, and the arrow next to Laurinaitis' name is pointing up.

The other side of this is that players who often say they're definitely coming back change their minds when finally faced with making the move. This revelation came from the linebacker's dad, which seems to carry more weight than what a player says. Dad wasn't asked. He offered this up.

"I'm not going to lie to you. I've kind of looked at Laurinaitis a little bit and had daydreams of him wearing maroon and gold. But he's not." Tim Brewster, Minnesota football coach, on Ohio State linebacker and Hamel, Minn., native James Laurinaitis.

I wonder how good of a recruiting host James would be to guys considering Minnesota, like Michael Floyd and Willie Mobley. Do school usually set up upperclassmen like James to be hosts to recruits.... I never really thought about it.

The stars on Northwestern's helmets are cool. I used to get those too ...

... on my homework when I was in the first grade. :roll1:

Meh. I guess when you're a small time private school with a limited athletics budget, you can't afford big scratch-n-sniff stickers.

How frequently does it happen in College Football where a player goes back to his hometown area to play an away game and has a great game? Lord knows we see it often enough in the 'Shoe (usually in a losing effort for the visitors).

So if Son-of-Animal goes in and has a great game in the HHH; how will we tell the difference from any other game this year?
