An ?exhausted? Bobby Carpenter gets his head on straight long enough to start for Dolphins
by Ben Volin
Last week was not exactly the easiest for Bobby Carpenter.
Arrive in South Florida on Sunday night after being signed off waivers. Figure out his housing situation. Have a car transported here from Ohio. Learn his new playbook. Learn the Bills.
Oh, and start for the Dolphins at inside linebacker seven days after arriving in town.
?I was very exhausted by the end of the week,? Carpenter said Thursday as he and his teammates prepared to face the Vikings. ?But it was nice to get out there. Once the game comes, you forget all that and just go play.?
Carpenter, in his fifth season out of Ohio State, has quickly taken over the role as nickel linebacker in the Dolphins? defense, especially with Channing Crowder shelved indefinitely with a groin injury and rookie A.J. Edds, drafted in the fourth round specifically for his pass-coverage abilities, out for the season with a torn ACL.
Sure enough, the Bills opened the game in a shotgun passing set, and there was Carpenter, starting for the Dolphins barely a week after being cut by the St. Louis Rams.
Veteran linebacker Tim Dobbins, acquired over the summer, has been taking most of Crowder?s reps during practice. But Dobbins is more of a run-stopper, and the Bills took 75 percent of their snaps from the shotgun, according to the website ProFootballFocus.com. The site also says Carpenter, who had one tackle, played 14 snaps against Buffalo, while Dobbins played seven.
?Whenever they go three receivers and a tight end, I?m usually going to be in the game,? Carpenter said. ?It was probably a little more than I anticipated, but it was exciting, and I got a good opportunity to play.?
Carpenter, traded to St. Louis this offseason after four disappointing seasons in Dallas, admits it will take him two or three more weeks to feel completely comfortable in Mike Nolan?s defense. But the learning curve isn?t so steep considering that his current bosses, Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland, employed a similar defense in Dallas when they made Carpenter their first-round pick in 2006.
?But the terminology is different,? Carpenter said. ?This defense is constantly evolving and changing, and I?m still trying to learn the basics that everyone takes for granted that they know. So I got to put extra study time in every week to get that.?
Carpenter doesn?t know how much he will play this week, but is certainly ready for a battle against Brett Favre and the Vikings.
?That?s the only way to put it,? said Carpenter, who has faced the Vikings in the preseason and regular season in each of his five NFL seasons. ?It?s going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight. We need to try to keep that Viking horn from being blown as few times as possible.?
The Dolphins are expected to start Bobby Carpenter for the second week in a row.
Built to Last - Bobby Carpenter
Story: Jason Ohlson | Intro: Annie Beecham
Bobby Carpenter does not fit the mold of a stereotypical jock. To begin with, he?s smart. He graduated with a bachelor?s degree in economics, which says something in itself. However, he didn?t just graduate, he excelled, with a GPA (in economics, let?s remember) of 3.0, and at Lancaster High School he was a 3.9 student. He?s intelligent, athletic and he?s built a model marriage with the woman of his dreams. They cook together and kick it together, with their seemingly biggest disagreements rooted in his roots?that pony tailed, blonde hair he?s been rocking for years?and an Abercrombie half-zip jacket he?s had longer than the hair, two things that mom would like to see go away.
He?s the type of guy that has universal appeal. Men, women, young and old, appreciate the path he?s taken?and the paths he hasn?t gone down, as well. Truly, Carpenter can do no wrong. He doesn?t overindulge in anything. He?s reached that kind of mythical balance that athletes spend careers striving for. And the thing is, he?s been this levelheaded since middle school, when he made a commitment to himself to be the best he possibly could be.
The following Q&A and photo shoot shows a humble 26-year-old, with wisdom beyond his years. The Dallas Cowboys linebacker is decked out in Homage tees and threads from G&Co in our photo shoot. These jeans, though, aren?t the kind he?ll be passing on to his newborn, but there?s no doubt that those genes will help the newest Carpenter continue the family legacy of athletic prowess.
Some have said that you seem to lack the aggression that once made you a feared OSU linebacker. What?s that all about?
Sometimes it?s tough to be aggressive when you?ve moved around a lot and to be able to fully understand what?s going on. It?s one thing to know what to do, but it?s another thing to have it just be an innate reaction when things are happening. It?s something that finally started to click at the end of last season. This season, being moved around and finally settling in?playing inside now?it?s something I?m looking forward to. I?m excited and I think this year could be a big year.

He's definitely running out of chances...given his appearances on e!spn programming, I think he has a pretty bright future in some form of sports broadcasting. Not a bad fallback.3074326;1795990; said::(
Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't catch on anywhere else.. I know Browns fans would love to see him get a shot though.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...t-lb-carpenter-former-cowboys-firstround-pickThe Miami Dolphins cut linebacker Bobby Carpenter, a former first-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys, on Monday after a series of special teams errors in Sunday's victory at Green Bay, the Miami Herald reported.
Carpenter also had played mostly on passing downs in the Dolphins defense while starter Channing Crowder was injured.
On Sunday, the Packers' Quinn Johnson beat Carpenter handily at the line of scrimmage and got a hand on Brandon Fields' punt that fluttered 29 yards. It was the third consecutive game in which a Dolphins punt had been blocked or partially blocked, and two of those were Carpenter's fault.
He wasn't starting for Miami. He was behind Dansby when they ran 3-4, not even listed on the depth chart for 4-3. He played ST, and from what I've seen from the Dolphins this year, he didn't look too great on ST either.

The home for displaced veteran defensive players is giving Bobby Carpenter a look.
According to Tom ?Killer? Kowalski of MLive.com, the linebacker had a workout for the team today at its facility in Allen Park, Mich.
Carpenter was released by the Miami Dolphins on Monday. A first-round bust for the Dallas Cowboys, Carpenter followed Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells to Miami. He struggled to make an impact on special teams and was cut loose.
Carpenter was the 18th pick in the 2006 draft from Ohio State. The Lions are seeking upgrades on virtually all levels of the defense. It?s unknown if they will work to sign Carpenter.
Bestbuck36;1796489; said:Wrong. He started 3 games for the Dolphins this year in Channing Crowder's place in the 3-4 next to Dansby. Crowder is abysmal yet he somehow gets a pass. Bobby hasnt been as aggressive in his play in the pros which makes him look out of place alot of times whereas at tOSU he attacked from whistle to whistle. They've questioned his toughness and desire at each stop. Dont know its either one of those thats holding him back, but he doesnt look like the same player honestly. As a long time Dolphins fan I was really hoping to get to see more Carpenter and less Crowder. :(
Bright side is they signed Spitler from the practice squad so he's still hanging around.
