LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

Carpenter in the house

St. Louis Rams linebacker Bobby Carpenter will be otherwise engaged - in an NFL exhibition game - and won't be in Ohio Stadium when his alma mater plays Marshall.

"But he wanted to be," younger brother George Carpenter said.

George, a junior, is a backup linebacker and plays on all but one special team for the Thundering Herd. The younger Carpenter said he and Bobby had "a little bit of brotherly love" going this week via their cell phones.

"He told me to stay motivated and keep my head on, which I will," George said. "Hopefully, we can get the win so I can rag on him."

Unlike most of his teammates, Carpenter knows what to expect when he takes the field tonight. He said he went to just about every home game in the four years his brother played for the Buckeyes.

"It won't be an eye-opener for me like it will be for the rest of my teammates," he said. "I'll just tell them to play hard and don't let them Ohio fans get to you."

Bobby Carpenter finds a home in Miami
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2010

Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland have re-hired one of their most famous draft misfires.

The Dolphins announced the signing of linebacker Bobby Carpenter on Monday. They released Charlie Anderson to make room as the Dolphins continued a massive roster shakeup. Carpenter, cut by the Rams this weekend, will bolster the inside linebacker depth with Channing Crowder hurt.

Wow, the browns could have had Bobby and Houshmanzadeh, or however you spell it.

Bobby has not been good, and Housh was going to go to a contender. In his Seattle contract, there was language that he would make his salary for this year no matter the team he played for. So a new team could pay him league minimum and Seattle has to make up the difference. He could literally go anywhere he wanted since he could take a league minimum salary and not take a pay cut. Therefore he was going to go to a contender.

Not sure why Seattle cut him to save $850,000. Unless, of course, he looked completely worthless (very possible).

They have a promising group of young guys in their WR group and probably didn't want his overpaid negative attitude in the locker room. I don't blame them. Can't stand that guy. I think it'll be interesting if Housh or Boldin don't get the touches they want. Both think they're #1 WRs, only one is.

Bobby Carpenter, Jason Allen have been on similar career tracks
Former 2006 first-rounders trying to outrun "draft bust" label
September 06, 2010|By Mike Berardino, Sun Sentinel

DAVIE ? When newly signed Bobby Carpenter walked into the Miami Dolphins facility on Monday morning, one of the first players who greeted him was Jason Allen.

This was entirely fitting, given the roller coaster of emotions those two defenders have experienced over the course of their hotly debated NFL careers.

Taken two picks apart in the first round of the 2006 draft ? Allen went 16th to Nick Saban's Dolphins, Carpenter went 18th to Bill Parcells' Dallas Cowboys ? neither has lived up to the lofty expectations that typically accompany such investments.

In many circles, they were dismissed with those same two painful words: draft bust.

"You know what's funny?" Carpenter said. "We actually went on a couple of [pre-draft] visits together. I hadn't talked to him since '07, when we played each other. I hardly even recognized him, but he's a nice guy. I'm glad he's here."

Not only is Allen still here. He has reclaimed a starting cornerback job for Sunday's season opener at Buffalo, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano confirmed.

Allen, who will start ahead of struggling second-year corner Sean Smith, has been handed a shot at career redemption, same as Carpenter, now on his third team in five seasons.

"The NFL is a whirlwind," Carpenter said. "You always have to be ready for what it's going to throw at you."

"I was disappointed with how it ended there," said the 6-foot-2, 249-pound Carpenter. "Last year I played pretty well and did some good things, so, hopefully, I'll come into a similar role here and be able to carry that through."

The son of former NFL running back Rob Carpenter, he had one start last year but finished with just 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Last May he was dealt to St. Louis, but he couldn't beat out former Ohio State teammate Larry Grant and became expendable.

Carpenter, who figures to move to No. 3 on the inside linebacker depth chart behind starters Karlos Dansby and Tim Dobbins with Crowder still out, said he hopes to play at least in a limited role Sunday.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to come in and contribute on the nickel packages early on, and the special teams. And from there we'll see," Carpenter said.

Bobby Carpenter goes back with Dolphins football czar Bill Parcells
Veteran linebacker becomes fourth current Dolphin that played for Parcells in Dallas
September 07, 2010|By Mike Berardino, Sun Sentinel

DAVIE ? With the signing of linebacker Bobby Carpenter, the Dolphins pushed back to four their census of former Cowboys who played for Bill Parcells in Dallas.

Carpenter, who played his rookie season of 2006 under Parcells, joins fullback Lousaka Polite, tight end Anthony Fasano and center Joe Berger. He just missed offensive lineman Cory Procter, released over the weekend.

That relationship no doubt had something to do with Carpenter getting another chance after the lowly Rams released him last week.

"I think he's definitely a huge figure in the NFL game and has been for the last 30-plus years," Carpenter said. "He's had a lot of success in every facet of the game he's been a part of. As a coach, a GM and now -- I don't know what exactly his title is -- head of football operations? Football czar?"

Carpenter laughed. Apparently, he's one of the few Dolphins secure enough in his relationship with Parcells to rib the big boss.

"They have all these names," he said. "I don't know exactly what [czar] means, but he's been tremendously successful."

It was Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland, however, who called Carpenter's agent, Jimmy Sexton, who also represents Parcells and coach Tony Sparano.

"I think [Ireland] is really making the decisions here," Carpenter said. "He's done a good job with personnel."
