LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

What Bobby needs is a change of scenery. Funny how similar Bobby and Mike Vrabel are in size and style of play. Vrabel also needed a change of scenery from Pittsburgh and look what happened when he ended up in the right system for his talents. It was rumored that Miami wanted Bobby. If The Big Tuna and Sparano see something in him, the talent must be there.

Sparano and Big Tune had him in Dallas and never used him either so I dunno, but I did hear the same thing.

I agree I think he could succeed with a change in scenery. I also have zero doubt about his heart either as someone else brought it up.

I didn't see the recent one on FT but in the past i've seen him do very well on camera so I dunno. Anyways, whatever happens to him I wish him nothing but luck and hope he's happy with whatever he does whether it be sticking with football or something else.

LB Carpenter might still have "the makeup"

Bill Parcells likes some players because they have, "the makeup." No, we're not talking eyeliner or lipstick here -- although some of your responses suggest some of you guys would like that. The makeup is about a player's disposition, work ethic, desire, ability, intelligence and other things that make him successful.

Of course, Parcells misses on some of these guys, but sometimes the guys Parcells identifies as having, "the makeup," don't succeed only because they're not given the right opportunity, or perhaps they are sidtracked by injuries. As Curley of the Three Stooges would say, they're victims of circumstances.

Bobby Carpenter might be one such player. When he was in Dallas, Parcells picked Carpenter with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2006 draft. Carpenter, 6-2 and 250 pounds, didn't blossom in the one year Parcells was there and has fallen behind on the depth chart the past couple of seasons.

Last year the Cowboys wanted inside linebacker help and they signed Zach Thomas. This year, they're talking of trying to sign Ray Lewis. Carpenter is seemingly never in the conversation.

And that might make Carpenter, bordering on becoming a bust in Dallas, a possible Parcells target in the coming weeks as the Dolphins search for inside linebacker help. Understand that the Dolphins showed mild interest in trading for Carpenter last season but the Cowboys rebuffed the overtures.

But after yet another season of unmet expectations in which Carpenter played only 13 games without any starts and was almost exclusively a special teams player, the Cowboys might be ready to cut their losses on this player. They would surely listen to overtures up until the April draft.

Similar to the article above, but from ESPN's rumor mill..

After three years of failing to live up to the expectations of the No. 18 overall selection in the 2006 draft, Bobby Carpenter's stock is not very high. But the man who drafted him that year might still want to give him one more chance, and according to the Miami Herald, these factors could contribute to the Miami Dolphins trading for the Dallas Cowboys linebacker.

The Dolphins will have a hole at middle linebacker this season with Channing Crowder headed to free agency. While the free agent market could yield a player like Ray Lewis or Bart Scott, Bill Parcells likes to go after players he says possess good "makeup", according to the Herald's Armando Salguero, and Carpenter would come much cheaper than the premium required to land a proven veteran. Salguero is of the opinion that it would only take a sixth- or seventh-round pick to bring Carpenter to the Dolphins, and this would be quite a bargain if the team's coaching staff could coax some production out of the Ohio State product.

Opportunity knocks for several Dallas Cowboys players

Thursday, March 19, 2009

IRVING ? One way or the other, the Cowboys have lost Terrell Owens, Roy Williams (the safety), Chris Canty, Brad Johnson and Kevin Burnett this off-season and added Gerald Sensabaugh, Igor Olshansky, Keith Brooking and Jon Kitna.

Opportunities have presented themselves to three players on the roster with Burnett leaving via free agency for San Diego, Owens' release and the club's decision to not re-sign free-agent nose tackle Tank Johnson.

With the draft coming up next month and free agency still going on, the Cowboys will/can add players to their roster. But for three players already on the roster, opportunities ? at least at this moment ? are there to become regular contributors.

Bobby Carpenter

Burnett's departure moves Carpenter up the dial at inside linebacker.

Now entering his fourth year, Carpenter's presence on the roster draw plenty of ire from fans, judging by the comments on the blog.

Once a player gets labeled, it's hard to get rid of that label. Carpenter is carrying around the baggage from the 2007 preseason game against Minnesota. Jerry Jones called him a "finesse" player on Hard Knocks. Maybe so. But I didn't see Burnett as this brute-type linebacker either.

Carpenter is athletic. He is a workout fiend. He can cover tight ends and backs. He has experience blitzing. Those are musts in this defense as a nickel linebacker. At least give him the chance to really show he can't do it.

Dallas Cowboys' Carpenter has been shopped
Burnett's departure makes trade less likely

DANA POINT, Calif. ? The Cowboys have looked into the possibility of trading linebacker Bobby Carpenter, according to sources, but might be more reluctant to move the former first-round pick with Kevin Burnett's departure.

Burnett signed a two-year deal with San Diego earlier this month, leaving Carpenter as the top backup on the roster and a leading candidate to take over Burnett's role in the substitute defensive packages.

The 18th overall pick in 2006, Carpenter has been credited with just seven tackles in the last two seasons, spending most of his time at special teams, where he has made 30 tackles in the last two seasons.

Bobby Carpenter (54) has seven tackles on defense since 2007.

Carpenter is scheduled to earn an $885,000 base salary this season. He has yet to cash in on a $1.895 million incentive based on playing time, which could make a trade more difficult if he did not re-work his contract.

While Cowboys coaches want Carpenter to be more physical, he has shown in preseason work he can cover tight ends and running backs. He also has experience rushing the passer.

Linebacker decisions ahead: Phillips said Keith Brooking could play in the substitute defensive packages following the loss of Kevin Burnett to free agency. Jones mentioned Bobby Carpenter as a possibility, too.

Brooking, 33, is entering his 13th year, and Carpenter has limited experience in those roles.

"We'll look at our linebacking [in the draft] and see if there's a young player that can run and will give us some help in there," Jones said. "And then of course I think Carpenter might have a chance there. He can run, cover good, and he might be able to do some of those things for us."

Draft adds pressure for Dallas Cowboys' Carpenter to make good
Tuesday, April 28, 2009

IRVING ? When the Cowboys drafted Jason Williams in the third round Sunday, they saw the Western Illinois linebacker as another Kevin Burnett. Williams is athletic, fast and can play on special teams.

"He can really run and he will really hit you," coach Wade Phillips said.

Burnett was a staple on the substitute defensive packages, but he signed with San Diego as a free agent this off-season. For Williams to take over that role, he will have to beat out Bobby Carpenter, the Cowboys' No. 1 pick in 2006.

"Bobby is a guy we expect to come through and play for us, especially in our sub packages where he can cover the backs man to man and he can blitz," Phillips said. "He's been working at it. This is time for him to step up."

Carpenter has been waiting.

In Phillips' two seasons, Carpenter has seen little time on defense. He was credited with only two tackles in 2007 and five in 2008, according to the coaching film, playing mostly special teams.

It was hardly what he expected when he came to the Cowboys.

"If you're never really given a realistic chance to show what you can do," Carpenter said, "then it can become very frustrating and tough mentally."

The Cowboys entertained the possibility of trading Carpenter in the off-season but pulled back after Burnett left.

Phillips and Carpenter talked about the expectations for 2009.

"I've tried to be honest with Bobby," Phillips said. "I said, 'Look, this is a new year. I've wiped the slate blank.' ... He's going to work at it. He's a worker, now. We're going to give him every opportunity to be the kind of player he feels he is and overall everybody feels like he can be."

Cowboys also drafted someone that they want to compete with Bobby for his minutes in the nickel and dime packages.
