LB Baron Browning (Arizona Cardinals)

Making an official to Michigan this weekend. Wiltfong thinks Michigan may be sneaking into the top 3 with Texas and UCLA. OSU definitely has ground to make up on UCLA and Texas and getting Okudah on board sooner rather than later would only help. Meanwhile the folks at TheWolverine think OSU leads the way currently.

Just found this snippet in another article:

Nation's top linebacker sets U-M visit

Kennedale (Texas) five-star linebacker Baron Browning will officially visit Michigan on Saturday, he announced on Monday night.

This will be Browning's first official visit of the recruiting process. He also visited Michigan in June during their camps in Ann Arbor. Ohio State, Texas, UCLA and Texas A&M are among the programs he's believed to be considering most.

Browning's older brother Barry played for and was recruited by Jim Harbaugh and will accompany him on his trip.

247 - Five-star LB Browning breaks down contenders, talks decision

Recaps his visit to Michigan. Mother talked to Coach Harbaugh about his long-term plans at UM. Visiting OSU on 11/26 and doesn't have any other officials set up yet. Talks in-depth about FSU, Alabama, UCLA, USC, OSU, TCU, Texas and LSU. Plan is to commit on 11/29 but might push it back to the US Army All-American Game.

Seems like a kid who is genuinely undecided and doesn't want to rush a decision after being previously committed to Baylor. Answers are fairly stock regarding schools that are likely on the outside looking in (on FSU, "I just like the way their defense is playing". Really? Giving up 34 to Ole Miss, 63 to Louisville, 35 to USF and 37 to UNC? Ranking 94th in total defense?) and seems to be playing his officials by ear with the exception of the scheduled OSU visit. Even the Michigan visit was last minute although I think they are a serious contender. But the fact the OSU visit is the only one scheduled well in advance leads me to believe OSU is certainly at or near the top right now. And again, having him on campus as the same time as Okudah, Dobbins and Wilson can only improve OSU's chances. Couple that with some one on one time with Coach Meyer and Coach Fickell and I still am fairly optimistic here.

good synopsis 45.

If I may, I have a query.

How does his already announced decision date reconcile with his "undecided" status?

I also don't think he has made up his mind, just trying to explain the 11/29 decision date.

I think it will be difficult to have much one on one time with Meyer and Fickell given the magnitude of this game, especially if ttun is undefeated as well. May be they all stay an extra day to celebrate :-)

I'm guessing they will try to keep the number of official visits on 11/26 as low as possible beyond the Texas group.

I'm just reading between the lines here because I don't have any inside knowledge on Browning's situation and am only going by what I have heard from those I think know what they are talking about. The standard recruiting tenet has been if the decision date is announced then a decision has either been made or there is a favorite that the recruit intends to visit prior to the announcement. And while that may be the case the fact that Baron admitted that if he is not ready to announce on 11/29 (his dad's birthday) then he will push it back to an all-star game suggests he possibly hasn't decided yet. Texas insiders suggest that he is waiting to see how Texas' season plays out. My feeling is OSU is at the front of his mind but he is leaving himself an out in case he isn't ready to make a decision after these officials. But if he sees what he needs to see then he will announce on 11/29. Some kids just like giving themselves an out if they feel they are not ready. I do think the fact that the OSU official is the only one that has been scheduled in advance is a good sign. And the fact it has been scheduled in conjunction with Okudah, Wilson and Dobbins visiting definitely is another check in the PRO column. And we know Coach Meyer's success rate in these situation...especially considering I fully expect his mom to be with him when he visits Columbus and she is prepared to ask the tough questions like she did to Harbaugh.

I have OSU as the choice right now because it just seems to make the most sense. The Michigan visit was last minute but they are a legit contender. He couldn't even name three other schools he plans to visit officially as of now. I would guess he will make a visit to Alabama and UCLA. Those are two schools he has mentioned for a long time. If I had to guess there might also be an official to TCU considering his dad played there and they continue to recruit him hard. LSU, USC, Texas and Florida State also remain in the mix but they seem like window dressing to me.

Here's a fun drinking game...do a shot every time I used the word "guess" or some derivation.

Well it looks like I was close. 247 profile now shows a visit scheduled to Alabama on 10/22 (Texas A&M), FSU on 10/28 (Florida), UCLA on 11/19 (USC) and OSU on 11/26 (Michigan). If nothing else he will see some good college football games. I saw one FSU analyst describe the visit on 10/28 as nothing more than a free trip. Still have to worry about Alabama and UCLA but I still like where OSU has positioned themselves.

I can see 4-5 more losses for UT... Mr. Browning, you'll look great in S&G :urban2:
My guess (just a guess) is he's thinking long term. He's a Texas fan and wants to be a Texas alum. In 40 years he will still be a Texas alum. I applaud that if that is the case. Texas just isn't a good 4 year decision. You won't win a lot of games, have no idea who your coach will be, and there will likely be more frustration than celebration. He will still likely make the NFL, though maybe a few spots lower and loose out on a couple million, but still make generational wealth. Just my completely uninformed guess.

If I were him, I'd go to Texas, for all the reasons you just stated. It's kind of a "hedge" decision but if you're from Texas and you want to live there long-term with no NFL guarantee, it's a solid life choice.
