Former Ohio State linebacker gets to return to defense he knows.
Three weeks might not seem like a long time to some, but for
Austin Spitler it felt like an eternity.
The fourth-year linebacker out of Ohio State who was a seventh-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in the 2010 NFL Draft was waived one week before the season opener. Today he was back at practice after catching a flight out of Dayton, Ohio last night and thankful that he didn’t just sit back and dwell on not being a part of an NFL roster.
“I was bored out of my mind but I was here most of the time working out,” said Spitler, who appeared in 43 games for Miami in his first three seasons, mostly on special teams. “I went back to Ohio for a little bit for a weekend here or there, saw the family and got to go to the (Ohio State-Wisconsin) game this past weekend so I was just bored and trying to find something to do.”
Spitler did receive a number of calls from other NFL teams after he was released and he worked out for the New England Patriots but was still without a team. When linebacker and good friend
Jason Trusnik suffered a rib injury Monday night at New Orleans, his phone rang again and this time it was to suit up again.
Since he is coming back to the team he played for and spent training camp with, the learning curve is non-existent. He is already familiar with defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle’s system and with the personnel he’d be out on the field with.
“It’s definitely nice. I wanted to be here so it worked itself out,” Spitler said. “It’s just good to be back and I felt fine at practice because I have been working out. It was good to see everybody and it’s good to get back and talk crap to some guys. I’ll be fine come Sunday because I’ve been down here training in the heat.”
