CINCINNATI ? The effort that showed he?s finally doing just fine as a Miami Dolphins rookie was not the way he stuffed Cincinnati kick returner Bernard Scott with a jarring special teams tackle in the fourth quarter Sunday.
It was the way he devoured those grilled chicken tacos ? with Chihuahua cheese, guacamole, black beans and pico ? when he went to dinner with his family at a downtown Cincinnati restaurant Saturday night.
?My appetite is just fine,? Austin Spitler said in the dressing room at Paul Brown Stadium after his Dolphins had further derailed the Bengals? season with a 22-14 victory.
While much of this area feels everything from disappointment to disgust over the under-achieving and 2-5 Bengals, there was one pocket of delight in the Miami Valley on Sunday.
Spitler is the first Bellbrook High product to play in the NFL, and several of his hometown friends, family members, and high school coaches were at the game and then waited for him near the team busses afterward.
When he finally appeared ? nattily dressed and sporting that traditional bloody gash over the bridge of his nose, a souvenir of his hard-hitting style and ill-fitting helmets ? he was hugged, kissed, photographed ... and viewed with pride.
?Nothing?s ever come easy for him,? said Bellbrook coach Kevin Basinger. ?He persevered through a lot at Ohio State ? injuries, playing behind (James) Laurinaitis ? and he never wavered.?
By his senior season, Spitler was a starting linebacker and an OSU captain, and this past spring the Dolphins drafted him in the seventh round.
