LBs get another scare as Spitler goes down

Columbus- Already without Tyler Moeller for the season, the Ohio State linebackers suffered another blow when senior Austin Spitler went down Tuesday.
Spitler strained a muscle in his calf, a source close to the team said, an injury not nearly as serious as the rumors of a potential knee injury that were drifting through Ohio State Internet message boards Tuesday night.
The Buckeyes hope Spitler would be sidelined for only a few weeks, the source said.
That means the Buckeyes, for the moment at least, are without the players who probably would have been their top two strong-side linebackers: Moeller was listed as the starter there in the spring, while Spitler has been working as the first-team strong-side linebacker this preseason.
Brian Rolle had been working the most with the first team at middle linebacker.

Return of Spitler Welcome News for OSU Linebacking Corps
By Brandon Castel

With just over a week before the season-opening kickoff against, things are finally starting to come together for Ohio State, at least on the injury front.

On Wednesday the Buckeyes got starting left guard Justin Boren back from a left knee injury that cost him much of fall camp, and now, according to linebacker Brian Rolle, the defense is expecting some reinforcements of its own Thursday as Austin Spitler returns to action.

After sitting for four years behind All-American James Laurinaitis, Spitler was more than ready for his chance to run with the first group this fall before a calf injury sidelined the senior linebacker only days into his final fall camp at Ohio State.

?It?s football and I?m sure he understands that things happen and you?re going to get injured, but he?s taking it well,? Rolle said. ?He?s just as excited as we are to get back out there tomorrow.?

Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker Austin Spitler eager to see his hard work pay off

Columbus- For three years, Ohio State's Austin Spitler rode the bench behind one of his best friends on the team, James Laurinaitis, who just happened to be a three-time All-American. Now, when his chance came, he was switched from the middle linebacker spot he'd been waiting to fill to strongside linebacker, then felt a pop in his leg during the preseason.

"It all started with my knee, and then it moved to the back of my knee, and then one day it was feeling tight and it popped when I was doing a pass rush," Spitler said. "It was scary, going through all the hard times and this was supposed to be my year, and I got hurt. But the rehab went well and I was ready to go."

The injury was a calf strain, nothing with his knee, and he returned to practice a week ago. And then, after all that, the fifth-year senior from Bellbrook, Ohio, was named one of the Buckeyes' three captains . . . and he didn't tell anybody.

"I don't like bragging about myself," Spitler said.

So it was left to his mother, Dawn, to call him after she heard the news from Ron Coleman, the father of fellow captain Kurt Coleman. "She kind of gave me an earful," Spitler said.

That's the kind of captain, one used to ceding the spotlight to others, that the Buckeyes are getting.

"I'm not the type to do a lot of rah-rah," Spitler said. "None of the captains are."

Against Navy on Saturday, Spitler should get his first career start, though against Navy's triple option, the Buckeyes have been using a lot of nickelback Jermale Hines at linebacker, and that could cut into Spitler's playing time. But at least he's healthy, has a role and knows his time has come
