LB Arvell Reese (Official Thread)

Gotta be tough to stand out in a bunch of athletes that are more or less equal. Couple of good plays here or there could be the difference. And, it's been my experience, that once a coach hones in on 'his' player, it's quite tough to change his mind and look your way. In the day, I tore everybody up on the court the week leading up to a game, but didn't get me off the pine. Was quite pissed, and one guy (a starter), asked me why, do you think you should've started? Said, no, but I certainly earned a shot at a few minutes. Coach was a driver's ed teacher, and didn't know the game. PS, by the way, I was a 0 star player in HS.

Hidden gem Arvell Reese is waiting in the wings, ready to shine

The sophomore linebacker is poised for more reps on defense, and with them, a glimpse at his potential for greatness.

As the Buckeyes’ starting lineup and depth chart start to take their final shape in advance of next weekend’s Week One game against Akron, linebacker Arvell Reese is still out to prove himself to coaches and teammates—and they’re taking notice.

The six-foot-four, 238-pound sophomore—a former four-star linebacker prospect out of Cleveland—moved to defensive end during his first offseason before switching to linebacker at the tail end of last year’s fall camp.

As a freshman last season, Reece was a summer enrollee and had some injury troubles at camp that limited him to special teams play early in the season. He then played in a few games at special teams before another early-season injury against Youngstown State took him out for a few weeks. In total, Reese played eight games last season, all on special teams.

But last year’s Arvell Reese and this year’s Arvell Reese are two very different players.

Now, he’s healthy and entering his first full year at linebacker after his position shift, making him one of the younger and more inexperienced players in a position group that includes Cody Simon, Sonny Styles, and C.J. Hicks. He’s ready to rise to the occasion.

Physically, Reese is extremely versatile, with explosive speed, the power to hit hard, and the quick intelligence to find gaps and shut down opponents’ run games. He has the potential to play multiple roles on defense, though he’s currently training as the Mike linebacker. His biggest learning curve in the spot has come in learning the playbook and finding the confidence he’ll need for the leadership the Mike position requires of him.

Just sayin': Our Lads has him listed as "2nd string" MLB behind Cody Simon:

We have a bunch of damn werewolves running around at LB. Styles, Hicks and Reese are each 6 foot 4 235 and can run like safeties.

From the talks if it… it’ll be tough to keep Reese off the field which is impressive considering. 2025 will have some very freaky LBs that’s for sure
Yeah there are some serious freak athlete alerts at LB. Reese I've always preferred at LB, but with the potential to be a standup DE on passing downs. You add the '25 class and it should be a great unit for years to come. I'm really excited to see Reese though, he won't beat out any of Simon, Styles or Hicks, but he should see the field early and often, and at the very least be a crucial depth piece this season.
