Idk if Reese was fully ready last year. He wasn’t playing like this last year. Simon’s leadership was needed, and he was a solid player who was rarely in the wrong spot. I think forcing Reese to start last year wouldve caused some major frusteration from fans and coaches. He had some big whiffs last year trying to make a highlight play, where Simon just made the play that wasn’t flashy but got the job done
Not disputing that and certainly not saying all the credit belongs to Patricia. Almost unanimously, though, (although I don't remember seeing a quote from Reese on the issue) our defensive guys, even those with multiple years in the Knowles system and Downs, who's renowned as having jedi-level football intellect, have said that they now better understand the defense, what they're doing, and how their roles fit in with the rest of the defense allowing them to play more freely and bring the heat, which Reese certainly does. I think he'd be really good under Knowles this year, but is better this year because Patricia's not limiting him.Yes, but I also think he would’ve excelled with Knowles too. He would’ve been in Knowles system for a 3rd year and I’m sure would’ve been every bit as good as Simon if not better with his athleticism
Arvell Reese
If I were awarding a team MVP for the first half of the season, it would go to Arvell Reese. Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith are Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith, yes. But what Reese is doing in the front six of this defense has elevated it to a whole other echelon. Per Pro Football Focus, he has the best pressure rate of any Buckeye, collecting 16 total pressures in just 58 pass rush snaps. He and Sonny Styles have completely eliminated the threat of mobile quarterbacks, as evidenced by the rushing numbers Demond Williams Jr., Parker Navarro and now Luke Altmyer limped to against the Silver Bullets.
Reese leads the Buckeyes in tackles (38) and is second in sacks (4.5) despite having less than half of the pass rush snaps that defensive ends Curry and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. do. Reese had another monster game against Illinois, with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks. The NFL scouts are drooling, and he could be a top-10 pick come spring at this rate.
