LB Arvell Reese (National Champion)

Idk if Reese was fully ready last year. He wasn’t playing like this last year. Simon’s leadership was needed, and he was a solid player who was rarely in the wrong spot. I think forcing Reese to start last year wouldve caused some major frusteration from fans and coaches. He had some big whiffs last year trying to make a highlight play, where Simon just made the play that wasn’t flashy but got the job done

This, Cody was playing at an elite level last year, if anything, it would make more sense to have had Arvell take reps from Sonny (who was playing damn well in his own right).

As good as he is, he's in the same camp as Marshon Lattimore. A guy who waited his turn (behind bonafide studs) and developed into a star as soon as he stepped into a starting role. Similarly, we'll only see Arvell for a season as well. I'll enjoy this while it lasts, if he keeps it up, he's in the same category as Hawk, Laurinaitis, Shazier, etc IMO

Yes, but I also think he would’ve excelled with Knowles too. He would’ve been in Knowles system for a 3rd year and I’m sure would’ve been every bit as good as Simon if not better with his athleticism
Not disputing that and certainly not saying all the credit belongs to Patricia. Almost unanimously, though, (although I don't remember seeing a quote from Reese on the issue) our defensive guys, even those with multiple years in the Knowles system and Downs, who's renowned as having jedi-level football intellect, have said that they now better understand the defense, what they're doing, and how their roles fit in with the rest of the defense allowing them to play more freely and bring the heat, which Reese certainly does. I think he'd be really good under Knowles this year, but is better this year because Patricia's not limiting him.

Arvell Reese

If I were awarding a team MVP for the first half of the season, it would go to Arvell Reese. Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith are Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith, yes. But what Reese is doing in the front six of this defense has elevated it to a whole other echelon. Per Pro Football Focus, he has the best pressure rate of any Buckeye, collecting 16 total pressures in just 58 pass rush snaps. He and Sonny Styles have completely eliminated the threat of mobile quarterbacks, as evidenced by the rushing numbers Demond Williams Jr., Parker Navarro and now Luke Altmyer limped to against the Silver Bullets.

Reese leads the Buckeyes in tackles (38) and is second in sacks (4.5) despite having less than half of the pass rush snaps that defensive ends Curry and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. do. Reese had another monster game against Illinois, with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks. The NFL scouts are drooling, and he could be a top-10 pick come spring at this rate.

Uhhh, thought Arvell is a junior in eligibility standing? Certainly, he could pull the plug and go pro, along with Styles (who's out of eligibility after this season). And yeah, count me in the group that was muchly surprised when Marshon became a star in the NFL, after being injured for most/much of his stay in C'bus. Has anyone heard Arvell speak to the press etc? Certainly he's become an 'instant' star (after several years of hard work here). He's certainly in the mold of a Katzenmoyer, rather than an Eichenberg on the field, and both had decent NFL careers. Believe Kat was injured, and Eichenberg still in some NFL camp?

Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs Named AP Midseason First-Team All-Americans

By Andy Anders on October 16, 2025 at 11:24 am @andyanders55

Five Buckeyes have earned high honors from the Associated Press at the midway point of the college football season.
Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese, safety Caleb Downs and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith were all named first-team AP midseason All-Americans on Thursday. Defensive linemen Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald took home second-team honors.
Reese has emerged as perhaps the best linebacker in college football through six games, and his recognition as a midseason first-teamer is further proof of that. He leads the Buckeyes in tackles with 38 and is second in sacks with 4.5, playing in a variety of spots on the field, including traditional off-ball linebacker, on the edge as a rusher and in the B-gap on the line of scrimmage.
Downs was a unanimous All-American in 2024, and his momentum hasn't slowed in 2025. The engine of Ohio State's defense, Downs has 28 tackles and an interception.
Smith continues to be the best receiver in college football, even if his stats have just been great and not nation-leading in 2025. He's been a major decoy for the Ohio State offense even when he's not getting the ball, freeing up other weapons for big plays. He has 40 receptions for 505 yards and seven touchdowns.

Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald have emerged as the anchors of the Ohio State defensive line at defensive end and defensive tackle, respectively. Curry has a team-high six sacks with 31 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, while McDonald has racked up incredible production for a nose guard with 26 tackles, six TFLs and three sacks.
Ohio State’s five total selections are the most of any school. The Buckeyes tied Texas A&M for the most first-team selections.
