LB Andrew Sweat (2011-12 B1G Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winner)

He played so well that I didn't even notice Homan was out until the third quarter.

They played Nickel almost all game... which put Spitler in for just over half of the defensive plays and Sweat switched in and out with him and Rolle played the other backer. He ran to the ball well and was ultra aggressive. He will be a big player next year.

His HS film showed he was great at getting past blockers and making plays in the backfield.

I'm a bit surprised he's the one who's been called on to step up. There was almost nothing on him from fall camp reports. I assumed he had been passed up by some of the pups.

He was very good for Trinity High School!
He may or may not be surprised! I know his mom is very proud of him. I talked to her about 2 weeks ago.

Sweat getting close. If Andrew Sweat had his way, he would be back in practice already. It has only been five and a half months since his ACL surgery, but already Sweat is petitioning to get back on the field. He was wearing a yellow non-contact jersey Friday, but Fickell said he jumped out there for some live action in practice the other day and now thinks he is ready to go. The medical staff is unlikely to clear him for another two to four weeks (typically 6-7 month recovery time for ACL surgeries), but Fickell said Sweat will definitely be back for the start of fall practice. Sweat is the one guy who could really make things interesting at the linebacker spot because he can play all three positions.

Sweat eager to return to action after surgery
Saturday, April 10, 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When they pass out the yellow "limited participation" jerseys at Ohio State football practice, Andrew Sweat is one of the most reluctant to put it on.

The junior linebacker is five months removed from major knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is being held out of contact this spring.

Well, sort of.

"He thinks he can go, and the other day, he jumped in there and went full-go," co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said yesterday. "Because of history, I'd rather keep him out, but he's doing pretty well."

Sweat played special teams as a true freshman in 2008 and was progressing quickly last year before he was injured. In seven games, Sweat had 15 tackles, including one for loss, plus an interception and a forced fumble.

Fickell said Sweat will likely be given full medical clearance in about a month.

Juniors Etienne Sabino, Andrew Sweat joined in OSU linebacking duel

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Andrew Sweat's version of a torn ACL was one of the strangest that Ohio State's team doctors had ever seen.

Last Sept. 26, the Ohio State backup linebacker made five tackles and recorded a sack against Illinois after starter Ross Homan left the game with a concussion. In that game, Sweat's left knee began to hurt, though there was no single play, no particular moment that caused it. A month later, Sweat was gone for the season, lost to knee surgery for something that had happened to him years earlier.

"They think it might have been in high school," Sweat said Sunday, though he'd never had any swelling in his knee.

Now, with a fully functioning left knee for the first time as a Buckeye -- "I feel faster, I honestly do," Sweat said -- he is involved in one of the few fights for a starting job taking place in preseason camp. It's two linebackers from the Class of 2008 for one spot.

Miami native Etienne Sabino was rated as the No. 1 inside linebacker prospect as a recruit. Sweat, from western Pennsylvania, was the No. 17 inside linebacker in the Class of 2008 according to Rivals.com.

Now they're going head-to-head. Unless Sweat redshirts.

Ohio State notes: Tressel won't break Sweat over this crew

COLUMBUS ? The battle for one of the starting linebacker positions continues to rage.

After playing with the first string for much of the preseason camp, junior Etienne Sabino went with the second group on Saturday in the annual Jersey Scrimmage at Ohio Stadium, with junior Andrew Sweat stepping in to start alongside returning starters Ross Homan and Brian Rolle.

Sweat (6-foot-2, 238 pounds) missed all of last season. He apparently has been catching up.

Rolle pointed out that Sweat has been sharpening his skills at both the Will and Sam linebacker positions. He played both in Saturday's scrimmage.

"Sweat's been good since he's been here," Coach Jim Tressel said. "It hurt us to lose him last year. He's going to play. Some people prognosticated he would redshirt this year, but he's too good for that. The 2010 Buckeyes need him."

As far as who starts, who plays more, who plays in the nickle package and more, Tressel said those things will sort themselves out over the coming weeks for the entire linebacking group.

"If we can have four or five linebackers ready to rock and roll," Tressel said, "that will unfold."

FRED SQUILLANTE | Dispatch
Andrew Sweat played with the first-team defense in Saturday's jersey scrimmage.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel isn't one to acknowledge Internet murmurings. But he did toss a verbal cold, wet towel on the rumor that linebacker Andrew Sweat would take a redshirt season.

"He's going to play," Tressel said. "There were some people prognosticating he might redshirt."

As Tressel recalled, the rumor was based on speculation that the redshirt would put more time between Sweat and the knee injury that cost him the latter half of last season. With two years of eligibility remaining, he would be able to step into a linebacker field devoid of this year's senior starters, Brian Rolle and Ross Homan.

"But he's too good for that," Tressel said. "The 2010 Buckeyes need him."

That was obvious Saturday when Sweat's appearance with the first-team defense in the jersey scrimmage caused a mild stir. With Rolle in the middle and Homan on the weak side, Sweat was No.1 on the strong side, ahead of Etienne Sabino in the competition to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Austin Spitler.

That competition continues, Tressel said. "I don't know that anyone would say, 'That's finished,' because (Sabino) has been working hard."

Later in the scrimmage, Sweat filled in on the weak side for Homan, who's dealing with a tender hamstring.

"If we can have four or five linebackers ready to rock and roll, who's the starter, who's going to play in the nickel and those things, that will unfold," Tressel said. "But I think they are pleased with (Sabino) and with Andrew. I wouldn't want to imply that (Sabino) is not doing well."

It's just that Sweat has fogged the picture, which was his intention after the coaches told him he was moving to the strong side for the first time when preseason camp started three weeks ago. The strong-side linebacker usually lines up opposite the tight end.

"I'm just going to give 100 percent, go 100 mph, and we'll see," Sweat said.

Strongside LB Andrew Sweat: The junior beat out Etienne Sabino for the job and should pick up where he left off when ACL surgery cut short his 2009 season.

"Andrew Sweat has been good since he's been here," Tressel said. "It hurt us losing him last year. That hurt our special teams; that hurt our depth."

Even as a starter, Sweat's issue will be playing time, as he's the linebacker who will come off the field when the Buckeyes go to their nickel defense. SAM LB starter Austin Spitler, for instance, barely played in the Rose Bowl last year because of that. Sweat is also playing the position for the first time after working at weakside and middle linebacker in the past. But with what he's already done in the preseason, there's no reason to doubt he won't play more and better than expected.

Washington native Sweat eager for starting role at Ohio State
By Mike Kovak, Staff writer, [email protected]

If Ohio State's defense proves good enough to carry the Buckeyes to a sixth consecutive Big Ten championship and beyond, Washington native Andrew Sweat will be a big reason why.

Sweat, a Trinity High School graduate, entered his junior year facing a possible redshirt season after he missed the final six games of last year with an ACL injury in his right knee.

Instead, Sweat surprised many when he earned the starting strong-side (SAM) linebacker position during a hotly contested dual with highly regarded Etienne Sabino in training camp.

"When I went to camp, I wasn't sure what was going to happen," Sweat said Saturday, just days before No. 2 Ohio State hosts Marshall in its season opener Thursday.

"A lot of people were talking redshirt. A lot of people were talking a lot of things. I went into camp and worked as hard as I could. I played football hard. I had fun with it and I went 100 miles per hour."
