Quinn family approves of Hawk

Buckeyes linebacker dating Irish QB's sister

TEMPE, A RIZ . | The verdict is in from the prospective in-laws: They approve.

<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Ty and Robin Quinn, who made an appearance Monday on Good Morning America with daughter Laura to discuss her relationship with A.J. Hawk, have been thrilled with the California college student's choice of boyfriends — even if he is from an enemy camp.
"I've never seen her like this," Robin Quinn said before the Fiesta Bowl. "He and Laura have a special relationship."
Ty Quinn appreciates the Centerville native's values, including his thrifty ways.
"He really is a good, quality kid," the elder Quinn said. "No cheap stuff (on the field). And he's probably got the first dime he ever made."
Laura has been dating the OSU linebacker for about four months, and Hawk has made frequent visits to the Quinn's suburban Columbus home.
He's joined the family for several meals, including one before Christmas when Brady, the Irish quarterback, was home.
"Even before Thanksgiving, when both teams had two or three games left, I said, 'Have you heard we could possibly play you guys if we win out and you win out?' " Robin Quinn recalled. "And he said, 'Yeah, there's a rumor of that.' I said, 'That would be awkward because you would be sacking my son.' And he said, 'Yes, I would.'
"That was our first meeting. I had only known him for like an hour. He just came right out and said it. And I told him, 'I don't know how I feel about that comment.'
"But we've enjoyed him."
Hawk did sack Quinn — twice for 16 yards in losses — and the OSU defense kept the Irish under control in a 34-20 win. Hawk, who gave his girlfriend a quick hug on his way to the locker room afterward, finished the season with 9.5 sacks and 16 tackles for losses. Quinn was 29-of-45 passing for 286 yards.
Both Hawk and Quinn played the game on antibiotics because of sore throats, said Robin Quinn, who added that Laura came down with the same ailment a couple of days after A.J.
Hmmm.
Laura's allegiances were so divided before the game that she wore a custom-made jersey that was half Notre Dame and half Ohio State. But her emotions changed by halftime.
"I thought I was even-keeled on this game," she told ABC. "But that older sister's protectiveness came out. I hope Notre Dame can come back."
Younger sister Kelly wasn't conflicted about her feelings. She donned a T-shirt that said, 'No half and half here. Go Irish."
Laura, an aspiring sportscaster, has done stints for ESPN and other cable networks this week, and she could parlay her sudden fame into a full-time career.
"She's getting lots of job offers based on the last couple days — from New York, Chicago," Ty Quinn said. "This is going to help."

TEMPE, Ariz. — It was about as fitting a tribute as a player named A.J. Hawk could expect.
Winning the defensive MVP trophy after Ohio State’s victory over Notre Dame last night in the Fiesta Bowl? Well, yeah, that probably was cool, too.
But as A.J. Hawk stepped forward to receive the award, tens of thousands of fans still in the stands flapped their arms. Coach Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes joined in.
"I didn’t really notice it until the very end," Hawk said. "That’s something some of the guys on the team started and I guess it caught on."
In four seasons, Hawk rose to be regarded as one of the great OSU linebackers. A two-time All-American and the 2005 Lombardi Award winner, he’s about to fly away to the NFL, where draft experts peg him as a high firstround pick in April.
But he had one last college game to play yesterday, against Notre Dame.
He led his team in tackles with 12. He led his defense in tackles for loss with 3.5.
More than anything, though, he led the defense, safety Donte Whitner said.
"When A.J. gets fired up about getting held or something, he’s different out there, and you could see he was fired up all night long," Whitner said.
As for Hawk’s two sacks of Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn, they were nothing personal, Hawk said. That’s even if one of the subplots to this matchup was the fact that Hawk’s girlfriend is Laura Quinn, older sister of Brady.
"Any time you get to a quarterback it feels good," Hawk said. "That was our game plan."
Hawk, along with defensive end Mike Kudla with three sacks, excelled at it, getting to Quinn more times than any other team this season. Quinn knew Hawk’s fourth-down sack near the OSU goal line late in the first half that saved a score was just Hawk being Hawk.
"Obviously, he’s a great player, and he showed up today and had a great game," Quinn said. "I’m sure he’s got a bright future in the NFL. He was playing in the Fiesta Bowl and he was playing against Notre Dame. He was amped."
But Hawk said the electricity flowing through him was generated as much to boost Tressel’s reputation. He had listened for a month as the media heaped praise on Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis and his offensive wizardry.
"I was thinking about what everyone was saying about giving coach Weis four weeks to prepare," Hawk said. "What about giving coach Tressel four weeks to prepare? He’s four out of five in the bowl games. That’s where I think the focus should have been from you guys."
Hawk wasn’t so bad himself in bowls. He was the defensive MVP here after the win over Kansas State following the 2003 season.
"A.J., man, he always shows up in the big games and plays great," safety Nate Salley said. "He did another great job tonight. I wouldn’t have expected anything less."
