LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

if we had won sat night, that game alone would have made him a lock for the butkus. he'll still get it, but he had an amazing game that would have been elevated to god-like status had we won. i don't think anyone in the media honestly expected our lb core to shut down vy like that. texas should probably check vy out, i think he has a concussion. those last few hits by hawk and expecially carp hurt him bad i think.

I go back to about '61 in following OSU football.

Depending on how we finish I could rate Hawk as the 2nd best LB and third best Defensive player we have had.

1. Tatum
2. Spiels
3. Hawk

So make sure you savor every play - they only come along every 20 years or so.

I was dreading coming to work this morning, seeing as everyone here knows I'm a hard-core Buckeye fan and was expecting them to give me ignorant shit all day. Not one has yet. Everyone, that's everyone, was raving on the game Hawk played, even the sole Texas fan who had come up from downstairs to talk shit last week. I think he locked down the Butkus Award Saturday night.

I totally agree..those three are gamce changers..you must game plan for all 3--Jack Tatum was the best college football payer I ever saw offense or defense..

I experienced the same thing. I knew the michigan fans would be down because of their loss, but that usually does not prevent the shitty comments. I have had multiple comments today. One shitty by a fairweather michigan fan and the rest have been along the lines of what a great game.

Speils had 11 career interceptions. I believe Hawk needs 5 this year to match that.

If Hawk gets 29 tackles against Michigan this year I will move him up.

That's TWENTY-NINE! Against Michigan.
Close, Hawk needs 4 to tie Speils 11. Hawk was named B10 Defensive POW:

BigTen.com
Football: OSU linebacker A.J. Hawk has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Here is what the Big Ten had to say about Hawk's performance on Saturday:

In a narrow loss to No. 2 Texas, Hawk spearheaded the Buckeyes defensive attack with a game-high 12 tackles, including seven solo stops, three tackles for loss (including two sacks), one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The two-time Preseason Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year picked off his seventh career pass in the second quarter and returned it 24 yards to set up an OSU field goal to take a 13-10 lead. On the next Longhorns’ possession, Hawk recovered a fumble to set up another field goal and a 16-10 advantage. The senior linebacker’s three tackles for loss set Texas back 12 yards, including 10 yards lost on his two sacks. This marks the second weekly accolade for Hawk, as he was also honored on Sept. 29, 2003.

Other players of the week:
Offense: Tyrell Sutton, RB, Northwestern
Co-Secial Teams: Marquice Cole, PR, Northwestern; Brandon Williams, KR/PR, Wisconsin.

First let me say I'm old enough to remember farther back than just hawk so its not an age thing and second Spiels is still my all time favorite Buckeye.

That said I think Hawk is bigger, stronger, faster and just plain better.

Also there is no way he can compete with the 29 tackle performance because A) no one will run the ball 40+ times a game against us anymore and to a lesser extent B) Spiels was a MLB Hawk is an OLB, just simple math would dictate that a percentage of plays are run completely away from him whereas Spiels could go sideline to sideline and get in on all of them.
