Whatever you do, remember you get what you pay for (craftsman trimmers are shit). I have had two Stihl trimmers in the last 6 years. The only reason I had to buy a new one this year is because my neighbor borrowed mine at the end of last season, then moved, out of state. I used good gas, and stablizer, and just cleaned the spark plug each spring. It always starts on the second or third pull.

The thing about using a spade to edge, every time you edge, there is now more bed and less lawn. If I wanted to keep that grass right up to the mulch look I use that black plastic edging. Get the good stuff (wider/deeper) and install it correctly, and it will last and deliver pretty much the same look.

I don't extend the bed, I'm basically just cleaning out mulch and dirt that has washed into the pre-existing edge.

The last spade I bent was because my weight on it was greater than the mil strength of the steel. As you bent several in a short time....

My first one broke because when I was prying out the dirt, it caught a root and snapped.

The 2nd one wasn'teven made well. The Home Depot people said they've had a ton returned. The brand was Vigoro.

It's the prying up of the dirt that bent it.
