This just goes to PROVE the Universities are full of shit when they promote "student athletes" as just that but then go and PROFIT off the athlete's accomplishments! TOTAL HYPOCRACY!

HAYN

I think you should return the aproximately $36K in free tuition that they gave you as a protest and to demonstrate your moral stance on this issue.

I agree 100 percent that these guys are exploited and have always been for them being either paid or given a better stipend. I have the home Gonzo jersey and the away 33, so I just alternate, because I too will wear Gonzo for the Michigan game, he always steps up huge against them!

I've always found this to be an interesting debate. Should only the players who have their numbers sold get paid (top D1 players in the nation at the top schools) or should every single player get paid? 99% of college athletes don't make universities any money and most in fact cost them money (OSU is a prime example with only football and men's bball in the black).

Does the money (or at least OSU's share) not go back to the University and it's Athletic Department?
I believe that is quite sufficient in all honesty, at least until the NCAA changes the rules by which stipends can be distributed. Even then, I'd far rather see stipends be distributed on a needs basis, rather than one that risks feeding a player's ego. (Not that I feel Gonzo, or Beanie or Laurinaitis have ego starvation issues, but think of the implications for what you propose in the hands of oh, let's say Da U.)

First of all Ohio State tuition isn't $36K a year. Second, when I was going to school even if I was on scholarship for four years your estimate would be about $10K over "the actual retail price". Third, I EARNED my "free education" my last year as a walk-on by becoming a starter for two seasons. Lastly, this isn't a protest but just a simple observation to what big time college football is all about...$$$ for the Universities. Simple as that.

I hadn't noticed the University profiting at the athletes' expense. The money goes to the athletics department (please correct me if I'm wrong) and is used to fund those sports that do not generate their own revenue. In other words, the 10% or so of OSU athletes in the 'money' programs allow for the existence of the other 800 student athletes. So... it's the athletes who are ripping off the athletes--not the university.

From what I've seen, the athletes are pretty well taken care of. Tuition, Room and board, and a great education, as well as outstanding coaching (can you say professional development) and an unparallelled opportunity to showcase your wares for the pro scouts. Not to mention top-rate training, medical, and associated support facilities.

The few athletes I knew lived pretty damn well (and yes, within the rules of 'amateur' athletics). Considering what I knew of their academic and financial backgrounds, I'd say they made out better than they ever could have dreamed in the absence of athletics.

I have the utmost respect for you, Hayn, and I'm sure there's a heck of a lot that I don't know about the way these things work (or how they did in your case), so please don't think this is directed at you. All I know is what I base off of a couple of BBall players.

Note: The above numbers are, of course, approximate. We've got about 100 revenue sport athletes, and about 900 athletes overall.

I want a classic Terna jersey dammit! Hey HAYN, maybe you can make some money on those! Herbie has his. It's your turn.

LOL! What a joke! I have two of them but they're not for sale. May be if OSU did get into customizing jerseys (like the poster above mentioned) you could get one.

BTW Herbie is your model person; all american boy, former captain etc! I, on the otherhand, if you knew me well enough don't even come close! I'm a nice guy and all but I still can get crazy and wild!

First: Out of state tuition when you were at the school was aproximately 9K per year (it's currently about 20K a year).

Second: My estimate was for tuition only and does not include all the other fun costs associated with attending a major university so it is actually a bit on the low side.

Third: No one is belittling your achievement. Just the notion that student athletes deserve substantially more than they already receive.

The same holds true for students in graduate programs. I would be happy to argue that most Universities make far more money from IP & patent rights that they own due to the hard work of research students.

Note: VprHis did an excellent job illustrating the point.
