‘RIP and thanks for all of the memories.’
Fans of The Simpsons are devastated after a long-running character was killed off.
Larry the Barfly is no more, after 35 years on the iconic cartoon show.
His first appearance was in the very first episode in 1989, the Christmas-themed Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.
Full name Larry Dalrymple, he usually sat next to fellow barflies at Moe’s Tavern, drinking a beer and looking a bit glum.
He rarely said anything, but popped up sporadically — a balding 42-year-old usually wearing a dark red jacket.
On Sunday night’s episode, Cremains of the Day, it was revealed that Larry had died, with Homer, Moe and fellow barflies Lenny and Carl going on a road trip to scatter his ashes.
Homer and his mates realise that, despite drinking in the same tavern as Larry, they barely knew him.
When Larry’s mum Iris tells them Larry considered them his “best friends” and asks them to share their fondest memories of him, they have to invent a fake tale about a fishing trip.
The character of Larry was voiced by Harry Shearer, who also provides the voices for several major Simpsons’ characters including Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and Waylon Smithers.
On the Simpsons Wiki Fandom page, Larry is rather unflatteringly described as an “ear-bender”, and a “glum” and “weird” fellow with a “dumb” and “drunk” look.
According to the Wiki Fandom page, Larry only officially spoke twice in the entire series.
In the early episode Bart Gets Hit By A Car, he sees Marge Simpson and says, “Who’s the chick?” before giving her a wolf-whistle.
In The Mysterious Voyage of Homer, he says just one word: “Colleague.”
Indeed, the most viewers ever discovered about Larry — that he liked fishing, that he called his fellow barflies “Moe’s Broes” — was in his final episode on the show.
Fans took to X to lament the loss of Larry, a man of few words but a constant presence across the show’s long history.
“Just learned they are killing off Larry on The Simpsons. I need a minute,” one fan wrote.
“I can’t believe they killed off Larry Dalrymple on The Simpsons last night,” another wrote.
A third noted: “One thing about the latest Simpsons episode is that, all jokes aside, Larry the Barfly’s life is really f****** sad and tragic.”
Others admitted they had never known the character’s name until his final episode.
“I’m over 30 and younger than 40 ... been watching The Simpsons all my life and just discovered the name of the guy that sits in the bar is named Larry,” one fan confessed.
Larry’s cause of death isn’t revealed.
He is simply there at Moe’s, drinking a beer and, moments later, when Moe kicks everyone out of the bar, he’s still at the bar — but no longer breathing.
