Last Thing You Purchased...

Think I remember seeing a thread about it in the computer, home theater forum.

Stay away from Bose. A pair of noise canceling headphones--that I loved--being my only Bose purchase, I never understood the audiophile disdain for the brand until I heard a friend's 1K+ Bose system in Cincy last month. It was weak as hell.

It's not that bose stinks at the low end. It is that they charge mid range prices for entry level performance and outprice the market for their higher end stuff.

I'll agree that it wasn't bad, just mediocre and when factoring in the price paid, a rip off. For over a grand I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as the $500 Yamaha theater in a box that I tried out for a week before returning.

my first "high end" headphone purchase was a pair of bose triports. being so ignorant, i thought i was in sonic heaven. after these headphones broke due to shoddy craftsmanship, i bought the inexpensive grado sr80 (my first true audiophile purchase on the way to about 15 headphones/iem's, not including amps, dacs, interconnects, etc.). i then realized that if you market your headphones as much as bose does, then you're targeting those who just don't know any better or care to research.

and if i'm going for a noise-canceling product and spending $300+, then i'm entering the world of iem's and loving the far, far, far, superior sound. i picked up these a few months ago for $300 (regularly $500), but you can buy them now for about $400:

I remember I impulse bought my original 1.0 version from an Admiral's Club back when I was flying 100K to 125K a year. That was over a decade ago. They served me pretty well for probably half a million miles in the air, and they've been retired for a few years now. These days, I just use normal earphones domestically and use the Bose that AA provides on international flights.

I have two of these, I use the with 8lb for jerk baits and tubes. A lot of reel for the money, I usually won't look at anything in that price range.

I'm kicking around one of these:

You may think, "Well the Daiwa is a better value" and you're probably right...

But I have 3 unassailable points.

1. My step father, who I do a lot of fishing with is a Daiwa-phile. He cannot be right all the time. Can't allow it.

2. A few years ago, I was getting ready for a very particular fishing excursion, and had dropped a bunch on terminal tackle, but felt like I needed to new rig, because sometimes you just do, and was walking through Wal Mart and saw an Pflueger Echelon combo, which is a rather modest set up by any measure, and I never had a single problem with that reel... ever... period.

3. You get to say "Flooooooggurrrr"

Three of these for Christmas dinner. Going to break them down over the weekend and render out all the fat, confit the legs and thighs, carve off the breasts, use the neck, wings and carcass to make duck stock and a mousse out of the livers.

Main course is duck confit risotto with shaved fresh white alba truffles, pan seared duck breast with a Madeira and black truffle sauce and duck liver mousse bruschetta. 1990 Dujac Charmes-Chambertin for the booze

I see you figured out how you wanted to use the truffles. Love that the main course uses virtually all parts of the duck. sounds delicious. Are you by any chance a chef?

Nope, just a home chef who's learned through trial and error. This will be my first time breaking down a duck. I do it all the time with chickens, so I hope I won't "butcher" the ducks in the figurative sense.

BTW, there is a Michelin 2 star chef in Chicago (Curtis Duffy at Grace) who is an Ohio State alum. Anyone looking to drop a lot of money on a world class meal should definitely think about supporting him and his new restaurant.
