I've heard that you have to see the director's cut to appreciate the film. I haven't seen it (the director's cut), but I had a similar reaction after seeing the theatrical version.

Yes I did, interesting... I might have to check that out. I could see an extended version being more compelling with the Muslim/Christian duality.
