So I've owned The Aviator for a decade and never watched it (the near 3 hr run time surely a factor). I finally remedied that this weekend (though still haven't used the disc I bought
). While it had a few rough edges (and will be too slow for many), the depiction and exploration of Hughes' accomplishments and struggles are truly brilliant.
Rotten Tomatoes nailed it with this synopsis:
"With a rich sense of period detail, The Aviator succeeds thanks to typically assured direction from Martin Scorsese and a strong performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, who charts Howard Hughes' descent from eccentric billionaire to reclusive madman."

Well said. I'm glad that folks have finally stopped viewing Leo through the lens of the boyfriend-murdering nonsense on the ill-fated boat (how did he get the bum rap and not her?). I'd have to think over your declaration but it was a pretty stellar performance.
