WWZ. I thought it was ok to pretty good but I haven't read the book. A guy came out to the bar from an earlier show while we were waiting for ours and went on and on about how it sucked and wasn't anything like the book and he just couldn't watch any more of it. He supposedly left his "date" inside the theater. I told him I wasn't a fanboy but if it turned out to suck, I'd be leaving with my date.
That guy was a fool. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the previews make it very clear that it's not like the book.

The problem with this movie is for people who have read the book, they are gonna hate it (like myself), it didn't help when the author of the book even came out and said basically the only thing that is similar to the book in the name of the movie.

If this was called anything else, it would be a good zombie film, but with it supposedly based off the book, most of the zombie nerds will hate it

My limited understanding is that the book is a lot like "Red Storm Rising" from way back in the day in that it involves fifteen different storylines all over the world at the same time. It made sense to me at the time that the first Clancy movie was "Hunt for Red October" rather than RSR. To a movie of RSR or WWZ faithful to the books you'd have to do a mini-series... "Winds of War" :) Again, dating myself with that reference.

I know it would be hard to follow the book exactly, but at minimum we wanted some of the major battles explained in the book like Battle of Yonkers

oh and the correct zombies

complete 180 from the zombies in the movie to the zombies in the book

Saw Man of Steel. The fight scenes were too big and overbearing. By the end of the movie I was hoping for shorter fight scenes. I was actually mad when the final showdown started, I was like "Really, we have to sit through this one more time?" It was almost like they were just trying to show off the great visuals/effects and wound up overdoing it. 5-10 minute fight scenes between people that can't really die gets old.

And I didn't feel the "wear and tear" in the fights. I guess I meant to say the thrown punches didn't amount to the victor, not even close. Just a bit of yawn-fests to me. They are certainly spectacular in that they are spectacles, but like Iron Man...not too fun of fights with the repetition. Look at the first Batman-Bane fight in TDKR. Those were brutal, heavy-handed fights; you could almost feel each blow being landed.

But I liked the story and the way it was handled for the most part. I was never a huge fan of Superman stuff (much more Batman, but never THAT big into any comic stuff). I think the next movie in the series will be an improvement.

Seen a few lately..

Man of Steel - liked it a lot, then it felt like a Michael Bay film. Chill on the action next time, guys. I mean, I guess it was cool for a few minutes, but it felt like half the movie. I really liked the pre-action parts though.

Monsters - Second time I've seen it, it's really good if you can enjoy a slow sci-fi with a little romance.

101 Dalmations and Aladdin. Not my choices, but it was nice to see them again. Hadn't seen either one since I was a child.

Les Miserables

I was shocked at how true they stayed to the musical, a rare and terrific decision. It brings such a visceral and personal aspect to the scenes many like me know so well. The opening scene with Valjean & Fontine's undoing were chilling.

Anne Hathaway is absolutely stunning and steals the show from a fairly strong cast of performers (Valjean, Bishop, Madame Thenardier, Eponine, Marius, Enjolras, Gavroche).

Russell Crowe would be a perfect casting for a non-musical rendition of this tale. He is somewhere between poor and terrible for the most emphatic role in the greatest musical ever. His voice would be pleasant for regular films. Painfully limited for the devastating anthems of Javert. Contrast that with the master of the house, who has a slightly worse voice than Javert/Crowe, but has a comical role and makes up for it with his antics and timing.

Hugh Jackman takes some serious liberties speaking, whispering, grimacing through the emotional lines, but succeeds with enough volume to bring it home.

The new song understandably falls far short of the iconic music, particularly with how each song builds on the rest.

For non-musical fans, this may be a 69% according to Rotten Tomatoes, but for Les Miserables fans this is a strong addition to the franchise.
