Can't waste the day when the night brings a hearse
I tried again to search for a thread with this already started.

I am preparing to have Lasik done. I have worn contacts for 15 years and recently I can't get away from constant eye infections. I have been retracted back to wear my glasses( which are terrible) and will be calling for a candidate appointment soon.

Has anyone on here had Lasik done? What hurdles did you have if any? Any reccomendations?

I had lasik done in Sept 2000 when it was relatively new and haven't had any problems. The procedure is probably a little different now (11 years later) but it was painless and pretty quick even back then. The only drawback was I had to wear an eye patch over the eye I had done (right eye only, my left eye was deemed "not bad enough to lasik) for a day and then I wasn't allowed to get any water at all in that eye (shower, swimming, etc.) for a week. I also had to put eye drops in the eye about 3-4 times a day for a couple weeks while it healed. But, all in all, very minor inconveniences and it was well worth it. I just got my driver's license renewed Friday and I passed the vision test easily even 11 years after the surgery.

:lol: Hate to rain on your parade, Mili, but this is not a ringing endorsement for "better vision through Lasik" (a local doctor's ad line). My grandmother (who is no longer with us now) was legally blind by her doctor's assessment and yet still passed the vision test, without glasses, at the BMV in Ohio a few years ago.

Got Lasik in December 2002. Procedure took about 10 minutes, had some halos around lights at night for a couple weeks. No problems other than that. One of the best decisions I've made.

Well, I do still have 20/20 in my lasiked eye...license test aside. :)

Everyone in my family has had Lasik at Arena Eye Surgeons (they've done a bunch of OSU athletes there too), a couple of them had to go back once or twice to have their eyes tweaked after the fact but otherwise have been happy with it. My father-in-law gets some "starburst" that affects his nighttime vision, and my dad is pretty much addicted to artificial tear eye drops.

I went there to be tested for candidacy and was denied because my eyes are just too terrible: Arena will only do Lasik for eyes up to -8.5 diopters, and I'm way past that. They suggested some sort of implantable lens, but the science didn't seem as settled as Lasik for me to be comfortable with it.

I had lasik a couple years ago. The procedure was painless, but the next 4-5 hours afterwards felt like someone cut my eyes with razorblades and poured alcohol in them. It's worth the up-front pain though. I'm guessing the worse your eyes are, the more they hurt afterwards? I know some people don't feel much pain at all but I sure did.

Whenever I travel or get sick, it's always cool thinking about what a pain in the butt wearing contacts was in those situations. I would recommend doing the "all lasik" method. (also known as intralasik, Ilasik or zlasik). The results are suppossedly more predictable and safer this way.

I still have mild halo's at night and my eyes burn sometimes when I'm tired. It's no big deal though. Very happy I did it.

Best money I ever spent. A little bit of discomfort the first night and then perfect.

I used Dr. Castellano here in Cbus he is the head of the OSU Eye Institute and a great doc. Highly recommended.

Mainly, right after the surgery I was able to spell recommendations...

Hurdles?
You'll have to get used to swimming without worrying about losing a contact.
You'll have to get used to being able to seeing clearly while underwater
...used to seeing clearly upon opening your eyes after sleeping - to be able to read the alarm clock for example.
...use to being able to see after going to bed and watching TV until you doze off. No stopping to remove contacts or glasses.
...to being able to see while showering.
And dozens more 'things' to get used to.

If you wore glasses for years, you would have to learn NOT to touch your glasses to make adjustments if you can't see something clearly - they ain't there anymore.
...and it's a bit silly, but you won't have to pack vision stuff when traveling.
If you can get past these types of things, and many more, then go for the lasik.

Had the surgery in 2004, and still have 20/15 vision (slightly better than 20/20!) It certainly enhanced my life.

Varies greatly based on your prescription. Generally, the worse your eyes are, the more it will cost you. It varies from Dr. to Dr. as well. I got quotes between 3K and 5K. (I highly recommed you go to multiple doctors) Final cost of mine was about $3,400. My vision was pretty bad. 20/400+ in one eye and 20/600 in the other. I used a health care spending account to lesson the blow of the cost.
