Laptop Recommendation?

muffler dragon

Bien. Bien chiludo.
All:

I have a friend who has $400 to spend on a laptop that she will primarily use for internet and email. I've been checking out newegg.com and amazon.com, but I'd like to know if you have any recommendations that you could pass on. I'll be the one coordinating this for her since the prices in Mexico are 3-4 times the price in the US. I realize it sounds pretty easy, but my fear is that I won't be able to help my friend out much as she lives in Mexico City. Thus, it will have to be rather fool proof.

Thanks.

At that price point, Acer or Toshiba.

I'd recommend skipping NewEgg and watching for an eBay Deal of the Day. Can find nice Toshibas for around $325 that way.

A cheap basic model thats 150 under your budget. She won't need a world beater for those tasks.

I think this is one is only good for the day,but it's a pretty good deal. You probably won't get a lot of i3's or better with that budget.

are you looking for brands or specs or both?

For reliability, Apple is up there, but nothing anywhere close to that price range (which is one reason their reliability is high, they don't sell cheap laptops). In the same areas of reliability is Asus, Toshiba, and Sony. Sony is normally expensive. So that pretty much leaves Asus and Toshiba for my recommendation in that price range. Dell in somewhat in the ballpark, and if you buy from their outlet you can sometimes get a higher end laptop for cheap. Taking more of a chance there, up to you.

From there, it would probably be better if you pick some of the ones you are looking at and post them here. I could then go into the pluses and minuses of each. I don't really feel like finding every $400 laptop, but I can definitely speak on the the hardware in the ones you are looking at once you post them.

Thanks. Just to ask: why skip NewEgg? I've had success based on past experiences. Is there more involved when purchasing PCs there? And regarding the Deal of the Day, is that a bidding process?

Dell Mini. Bought the wife one and she loves it. It's small but does everything. has built in web cam. no Cd/dvd/disks though. got it for around $400

I had thought about this, because of my company's Employee Purchase Program with Dell. But the reviews on the Mini 1018 were poor compared to the Acer. That's the fear that spawned this thread. Maybe your experience is more true to what I should expect though.

Primarily reliability (to some extent). Don't care about the brand as long as it's trustworthy.

No, the eBay Daily Deals are all Buy-It Now purchases, and are typically heavily discounted (overstock). For example, one of today's Daily Deals is a Lenovo G560 Dual Core laptop.

$429 over at NewEgg. $409 at Buy.com. $339 right now on eBay, and it is sold through MacMall. Free shipping, no sales tax.

I check the Daily Deal on eBay every morning. There is no better way to get mid-priced electronics, appliances, high-end watches, etc ..., in my IMHO, of course.

Now, I can't speak about that particular Lenovo specifically, but if I were on the market for a laptop, I'd check the Daily Deals every day and jump on the next Toshiba that comes up.

This..

I love my Toshiba. Best picture rez bar none. Only drawback is the keyboard is a little quirky/sensitive. But it is a great deal.

MacMall apparently owns OnSale, eater of HP Touchpad orders.
