If you can get a MacBook Pro on someone's dime then that is a no-brainer decision Clarity.
Seriously - the answer is affirmatively a yes.
Screen is excellent and the media tools are as you suggest bar none.

Two other things you may find a MacBook really excellent at doing?

wrangling those repetitive text replacements - BBEdit is highly recommended;

any coding work - there are are some good coding tools on the Mac.

He can get a MacBook Pro essentially free - stop trying to sell Clarity on a Volkswagen when he is being offered a Porsche :tongue2:

Are you gonna run Windows on a Mac?

Nope, they run Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. I don't really have a problem not having Windows. I like Vista (I know, that's like saying you enjoy being peed upon), but there's nothing to it I couldn't live without.

I *would* miss Word and Excel, but I understand 2008 Mac versions of each will be coming out this Fall.

I just don't know though. Penn State has deals with Dell and Apple, and I'm not interested in Dell. I could, of course, take their money and buy something else entirely, but there's a huge discount for educational purchases with Apple.

This all assumes they renew my scholarship. If they don't, I won't be buying anything, and Jo and I will share a machine after this one dies.

My POS Dell kicked the bucket, so I've replaced it with a Compaq (specs below). Got a really good deal on this at Staples right now if anyone needs one. I paid 599 (reg 799) which is 100 cheaper than the similarly spec'd HP.

Presario V6310
15.4" widescreen display
802.11 g
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Tech TL-50 1.6 Ghz (Dual core)
1 Gb RAM
100 Gb HD
DVD/CD combo burner
Windows Vista Premium

good luck with that

If it's a $2800 Macbook Pro.....well yes.
If it's the $2000 one....not so much.
Circuit City has both the Tosh and the Mac Pro.
Go have a look.

I can't, that's sort of the issue. 99% of my purchase decisions (what few I have to make these days) are made through online research and word of mouth.

The Toshiba looks great for $850, and this thread isn't the only place I've heard good things about Acer. Dell and "high end" companies like Sager, Alienware, Falcon, Widow, etc., are the only places/companies I'm just flat not interested in. Even Dell, I'm not violently opposed per se, just would prefer to go elsewhere because of past experiences, and the fact that they still owe me the $50 (from like 4 years ago) they promised they'd give back as soon as I returned a faulty part.

I've got 3-4 months before I'm in the market to buy, and even then won't know until the last minute if I'm funded for it. So plenty of time to figure things out. Until then, it's not that big a deal to reseat this powercord every 5-10 minutes, and restart it every 20-30. If I knew it would stay like that forever, I'd hang in and make it serve another couple years duty. I'm not optimistic though.

Power issues are a pain in the neck, indeed. The motherboard on my HP Pavilion has been replaced at least 5 times in less than 3 years, and is on its last legs again. I finally bought a separate monitor and wireless keyboard so the computer has basically become a desktop that doesn't have to be moved. It's been a great computer otherwise, but I won't buy another as I hear it's a common problem with the HPs.

I want a fully upgradeable, build-it-yourself laptop computer. If only...

are power issues a common problem for laptops? my hp will just shut off at random times when I am using the computer. Also i have a hard time charging the battery, I really have to bend the power cord in a certain manner so that it will charge.

Expect it to get worse. You're a few weeks away from needing to replace the motherboard, too. (The power connector is soldered to it.) They did tell me that a bad battery was making the problem worse by not drawing or storing power evenly (or something like that), so you might want to replace the battery now.

Its been going on for 6-7 months, i replaced the AC adapter back then and it fixed the problem for a few months. It has since returned. I find that it usually shuts off if I have it in my lap, maybe it gets too hot. The laptop is only 2 years old, is that the life span to be expected?

No idea, but in about 2.5 years, mine has been in the shop 5 times. Granted, it is subject to more than occasional use...
