Laptop hard drive died...

rocketman

flying low
And it took an hour to get a new one....

Woke up today, opened up my laptop and it was unresponsive. Rebooted it and heard the hard drive click 'o' death going on and I felt nauseous. Called up Apple tech support and I told them what I thought it was and they got right to the point with no useless diagnostics tests. Went to the Apple store and got a new hard drive and a fresh copy of OS X installed in 30 mins.

Couldn't be more pleased and I'm glad I got the extended warranty because the replacement didn't cost me a penny. All the while I was thinking about Clarity's hellish experience with Dell's tech support.

Thankfully all my stuff is backed up on my ipod as well as other network drives, so nothing serious was lost.

I think I'm getting the tick of death. My laptop sounds like a clock right now. Doesn't sound good. When I try to boot it up it says "primary hard disk drive 0 not found." Did it just fry? :(

If you don't do regular back ups, you should certainly do one now!

I can't do a backup -- the computer won't boot up. I backed up a few months ago, but this means I lose my Colorado photos and a few other things I should have backed up. :smash:

I feel lost without this thing. Manfred's computer sucks. :p

See if it comes back up.
If it does back up your shit right now!

It actually started ticking this afternoon when it was idling in my office. I did just that -- turned it off to cool down and have been turning it on at times since then, but I keep getting the same awful sound and "primary hard disk drive 0 not found" screen.

This always seems to happen at the worst times. In grad school I lost 10 pages of my master's thesis when my hard drive and motherboard fried (thanks to a late-night Dr. Pepper spill :(), and now that I have a ton of freelance work and was going to apply for a job this weekend (updated resume was also on the hard drive :smash:), it happens again.

If that doesn't work here are 10 ideas that have worked for me -

1. Submerge the lap top in warm soapy water for about 10 minutes to remove any possible dust build up. DO NOT submerge the lap top while it is powered on. This can cause permanent damage.

2. If you have a scanner remove the hard drive and scan each surface. When you get a new laptop you can do the same with its drive. Then you can photo shop the two into one integrated data repository.

3. You can remove data from a hard drive using a fine, sensitive magnet. You need to move slowly and will need a magnifying glass to discern the ones and zeros which need to remain in the precise same sequence when you reload them on the new lap top.

4. If there is a stable nearby (someplace that sells saddles and the like) call them and see if they will sell you a parity bit.

5. In the future BACK YOUR SHIT UP DUMB ASS!! NOBODY on this planet is still using a computer that is more than 5 years old for anything other than Klondike Solitaire. They go bad. They ALWAYS go bad.

6 - 10. Sorry. These were on my old machine and I no longer have them.
