One question: how was a team that was as good defensively as Tennessee THAT bad? Tennessee was 13th nationally in rush defense, 5th nationally in pass defense, 4th nationally in total defense, and 12th nationally in scoring defense.

While bringing in his dad Monte certainly can't be a bad thing, the problem was CLEARLY not on the defensive side of the football. They return 6 starters on D, including 3 in the secondary, so they look to be very strong on defense next season too. The real question is can he work his QB magic and turn Crompton into a good game manager like JPW, find a replacement for Arian Foster, and is an OL that struggled mightily this season going to be able to overcome the loss of two seniors?

Unfortunately, this Kiffin hire is looking better by the day. Lane & Monte Kiffin, James Cregg, Ed Orgeron, and David Reaves. He is building a heck of a coaching staff. I can tolerate UT fans while they suck, but I really don't want to see the Vols as a successful team again.

Gotta agree with the super staff comment. Thank goodness though, the SEC east needs a real contender to push Florida, and despite what Georgia wants to believe, they are the SEC's PSU. Really good every once in a while but mostly a #3 or #4 overall in the league

ESPN - Ed Orgeron to take associate head coach job at Tennessee

Widely hailed as one of the top recruiters and defensive line coaches in football, Orgeron also had worked with Lane Kiffin when the pair were part of two national championship teams at USC.

Orgeron, who had learned to evaluate talent in his days at Miami under then-Hurricanes coach Jimmy Johnson and from Pete Carroll, who was the Trojans recruiting coordinator as the program returned to the top of the college football world. As a line coach he has developed first-round picks Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp and Mike Patterson. He also was responisble for most of the talent that has developed into a top 25 team at Ole Miss this season.

When will anyone realize:

Pete Carroll's assistants are NOT Pete Carroll.

I think Tennessee is putting together a great coaching staff. Orgeron may not have what it takes to be a head coach, but he is a difference maker with the dline and recruiting.

Completely agree, UT's defense will be among the best in the nation with Monte Kiffin and Orgeron. Orgeron's hiring could also affect us in Cincy recruiting. Just look at what Ole Miss is doing with his recruits.

We can merge this later if necessary, but thought the topic would get more hits than if it were simply under their main thread:

Kiffin accuses Meyer of recruiting violation
Posted: 10:06 AM Feb 5, 2009

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Signing day has passed, but the bullets are still flying between Tennessee and Florida.

Thursday morning at a recruiting celebration banquet, Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin accused Florida's Urban Meyer of a recruiting violation in the recruitment of Pahokee, Fla. wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson.

Kiffin's allegation: that Meyer repeatedly called Richardson while he was on his official visit to UT.

"I'm gonna turn Florida in right here in front of you," Kiffin told the crowd at the Knoxville Convention Center. "While Nu'Keese was on campus, his phone kept ringing. One of the coaches says, 'who's that?' And he said, Urban Meyer."

"I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn't get him," Kiffin said.
Football coaches are not permitted to contact a prospect while he is on an official visit to another school's campus.

OH IT?S TORTURE TIME NOW

Oh, it?s on, you adorable, bewhiskered motherfucker:

?I?m gonna turn Florida in right here in front of you,? Kiffin told the crowd at the Knoxville Convention Center. ?As Nu?Keese was in the meeting, his phone kept ringing. One of the coaches says, ?who?s that?? And he said, Urban Meyer.?

?I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn?t get him,? Kiffin said.
(Watch the video here.)

Oh, Kiffykins. To the pain was the baseline, but it?s torture time now. To earn further future blowouts in painful fashion, Kiffin and co. skunked LSU on Janzen Jackson, a Louisiana corner who was booed by the home crowd when he announced he would be going to Tennessee. If Lane Kiffin dies today crushed by a one-ton block of taffy dropped from Barkevious Mingo?s Indestructible Imperial Dirigible, don?t even try to act surprised.

Traditionally, most coaches in the SEC wait until they are about to be fired before they accuse other schools of "tampering" with recruits.

Either Kiffin has no how recruiting takes place or he'll be canned by Week 5.

I don't understand Kiffin's thought process. After spending time with the Raiders, he isn't intimidating anyone. In fact, if there were anything scary about Tennessee's coaching staff it wouldn't be him, it would be his assistants. I also don't like how Kiffin is already stepping on other coach's feet. He said this about Meyer, also made some rather dumb comments about Florida, stepped on Nick Saban's feet, took numerous coaches from other SEC schools, and took a couple commits away from LSU.

Luckily, Marlon Brown has his head on straight. He's going to Georgia, committing them over Tennessee. He had some choice words about Tennessee's Ed Orgeron, too. http://spiritreplay.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/090204_brown.wmv
