Lane Kiffin pushed back against wearing bulletproof vest in return to Tennessee as Alabama OC

College football, y’all.

Suffice to say, Lane Kiffin‘s departure from Rocky Top after one season as head coach at Tennessee for the same job at USC left a bad taste in the mouth of many members of Vols Nation. How bad of a taste? From ESPN.com in January of 2010:

But the real trick for Kiffin was figuring out a way to leave the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center late Tuesday night in one piece.

Groups of angry students and fans began surrounding the football complex after the news leaked that Kiffin had taken the USC job. Eventually, it evolved into a mob-like scene, with police moving in and barricading Johnny Majors Drive in front of the football complex.

Every time a car moved anywhere in the vicinity of the complex, the mob ran in that direction, shouting and chanting, “F— you Kiffin!

Fast-forward nearly five years, and Kiffin made his return — a triumphant, winning return as it turned out — to Neyland Stadium as the offensive coordinator at rival Alabama in October of 2014. Ahead of that return, security was fearful for Kiffin’s life. So fearful, in fact, that they wanted the former Volunteers head coach to wear a bulletproof vest into the famed stadium.

At least that’s what the current Florida Atlantic head coach claimed on Marty Smith‘s podcast, by way of 247Sports.com:

It’s crazy. They were literally talking about like — from the bus in — a bulletproof vest. I’m like, ‘Come on, guys. This is football.’ They said, ‘No, really.’ They had security with me the whole way, even walking on the field and stuff like that,” Kiffin said. “I’m just like ‘I’m not wearing a vest, guys. All right?’ That’s a little bit over the top. It was all in fun. There was a lot of mean words said — four-letter words. That speaks of Tennessee’s fans, just how passionate they are. I think Phillip Fulmer said it the other day, ‘We have the most passionate fans in the country.

Athletic directors poll finds overwhelming lack of support for Lane Kiffin moving to bigger job

Lane Kiffin has quickly turned around his reputation from one-time pariah after stints at Tennessee and USC to one of college football’s favorite head coaches on Twitter. He’s not afraid to mix things up with his old boss Nick Saban and has successfully turned around his Florida Atlantic program to the point where the Owls are favorites for a second straight league title in 2018.

Despite checking off a lot of boxes though, getting a bigger job and being a hot name on the coaching carousel does not appear to be in the cards for the still-young head coach. In a poll of 15 athletic directors, Yahoo! Sports found that 11 would not consider hiring Kiffin and the other four were evenly split between yes and maybe.

Of course it takes just one to say yes to the Lane Train but the comments were not exactly encouraging:

One source in the college sports industry summed up Kiffin’s reality this way: “Can he get a job? Sure. He’s a world-class play caller, knows the game and can recruit. Do I think we’re at a moment in time with off-field issues and the FBI probe that people are less apt to take that risk? Yes.”

Said a second: “Not a chance. Too much smoke/drama around him. And he’ll probably think he’s Vince Lombardi if he wins another season.”

Many laughed when Kiffin signed a 10 year contract with FAU this offseason but maybe him sticking around Boca for a decade isn’t so far-fetched after all.

Would a Power Five school hire Lane Kiffin? ADs weigh in on 'high-risk, high-reward' coach

Yahoo Sports polled 15 athletic directors to get their anonymous take on whether they’d consider hiring Lane Kiffin. The results were intriguing – two “Yes” votes, two “Maybe” votes and 11 “No” votes. (A few of the “No” votes were accompanied by multiple exclamation points. One AD even added a zebra emoticon to accentuate his point: “Stripes are on the zebra.”)

And then I saw myself making that game winning catch - fade into the southeast corner of the field with only 5 seconds on the clock as we beat South North Central East A&M for the right to bitch about how the Power 5 always get the big bowl bids...
