NW is only better than Duke academically in certain areas. NW is much more liberal, while Duke has excellent pre-med programs I believe. Both are stellar schools, not much overall difference really.

And better weather, great basketball team to enjoy, up and coming program and coach, etc.

I'm obviously just speculating, but he may have felt like Duke had a better chance of actually competing in their conference.
