Sophomore Jantel Lavender had 20 points and 19 rebounds in Ohio State's season-opening win over Butler.

The kid arrived as advertised last night for her debut performance with the Ohio State women's basketball team.
Samantha Prahalis, a freshman point guard from Commack, N.Y., brought a bit of dazzle and a splash of sizzle for the 18th-ranked Buckeyes during a 75-56 win over Butler in both teams' opener in Value City Arena.
Along the way, she shooed away a few first-half butterflies, survived a leg cramp late in the second half and still finished with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds in 28 minutes. The 2,257 fans seemed to like her. She heard them, especially after dishing a pick-and-roll pass to Jantel Lavender in the second half that led to a basket.
"Yeah," Prahalis said. "I had a little nervousness because it was my first game. I think I was trying to make plays instead of letting the game come to me. After I came out in the first half, I realized like, 'Just relax.' Then the second half was definitely a whole different start. I had fun."

Random thoughts on the opener

Beyond the obvious - freshman point guard Samantha Prahalis is pretty good - what stood out most in Ohio State's 75-56 win over Butler is that the Buckeyes are really, really young.
Coach Jim Foster started sophomore guards Brittany Johnson and Alison Jackson with Prahalis. Sophomore Jantel Lavender, of course, was back in the lineup. She is a taller version of Prahalis, which means she is pretty good. Star Allen also returned. Star is a senior but she missed 18 of 31 games last season with academic troubles so she is not as veteran as it seems.

1 p.m. today
? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 1-0; Army 0-1
? Matchup to watch: Second game of the season for the new starting guards, Samantha Prahalis, Alison Jackson and Brittany Johnson. Those three, plus reserves Ashlee Trebilcock, Shavelle Little and Maria Moeller, need to take better care of the basketball. Twenty turnovers against Butler led to 21 points for the Bulldogs. That won't cut it as the season goes on.

COURTNEY HERGESHEIMER | Dispatch
Freshman guard Samantha Prahalis had 14 points, four assists and three rebounds in Ohio State's season opener.

By the end of the game Friday, Butler coach Beth Couture had seen enough of the Ohio State women's basketball team to appreciate some of the possibilities that Buckeye coach Jim Foster must have percolating in his head.
"They have a lot of weapons," Couture said in the wake of Ohio State's 75-56 win. "He has two different guard looks. He's got a guard look that can shoot the lights out, and he's got a guard look that can (defense) you up and get to the hole. It will be interesting to watch them throughout the season as some of these younger kids get better."
The younger kids in question, freshman point guard Samantha Prahalis and sophomore guards Alison Jackson and Brittany Johnson, will make a quick return to the on-court classroom at 1 p.m. today when the Buckeyes (1-0) play host to Army (0-1) in Value City Arena.

From article linked above "Random thoughts on opener"
I did not see potential recruit Shenneika Smith, a wing/guard out of Brooklyn, N.Y. Smith is said to be making an unofficial visit to Ohio State this weekend. She and Prahalis played AAU ball together and are good friends. Smith, a lean 6-1, is the type of player Foster is trying to attract to turn the Buckeyes into a quicker, athletic bunch

OSU women's basketball: Lavender scores 24 in huge first half
Defense forces 25 turnovers in balanced effort

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Two years ago at West Point, Army coach Dave Magarity took an up-close-and-personal look at an Ohio State team that featured All-American center Jessica Davenport and lost the game 77-41. Magarity brought the Black Knights to Value City Arena yesterday for an encounter with a different version of the Buckeyes built around sophomore center Jantel Lavender. He lost again, 92-58, but said afterward that he would have liked his chances better had he been playing that other team.
"I made a comment to my staff that I just think this team is a lot better than that team in terms of their size, their depth, their passing skills, their guard play," Magarity said. "They just seem a lot deeper and a lot more skilled."
He glanced at a stat sheet that showed Lavender with 28 points, 10 rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes.
"She's a special player," Magarity said. "As good as Davenport was, I just think Lavender adds a whole different dimension to that post spot and we couldn't handle her. We tried to double from the opposite post and she just gets her shot off too quick. We tried to double from the guards and she's too powerful."
Lavender broke loose for 24 points in the first half while the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (2-0) eased to a 45-32 lead. In the second half, OSU coach Jim Foster limited her to nine minutes, but the offense continued to click with different combinations on the floor.
"I think we had a lot more patience today," Lavender said. "We reversed the ball more like coach always says. When you reverse the ball, it opens everything up. It makes everybody open and all the players get to their spots better. We took our time and made the extra pass to our teammates."

COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Buckeyes cruise as Army is overcome by Lavender

Monday, November 17, 2008 From wire reports

The only surprise for Army coach Dave Magarity on Sunday in Columbus was Ohio State center Jantel Lavender didn't score more.
Lavender, a former star at Cleveland Central Catholic, had 28 points to lead No. 18 Ohio State women's basketball team to a 92-58 win over Army, but only four came after halftime when she played just nine minutes.
"I'm shocked to see she only had 28 after having 24 at the half," Magarity said.
Ohio State (2-0) also got 14 points from Star Allen and 11 from Ashlee Trebilcock.
"We were a lot more patient today," Lavender said, comparing Sunday's effort to Friday's game against Butler. "We reversed the ball more. That opens up the floor. When we do that we are a very effective team."
Lavender was nearly unstoppable in the first half, hitting 9 of 10 field goals, 6 of 7 free throws and grabbing five rebounds.

Big Ten tidbits

I went on line this morning looking to see if Jantel Lavender had been named Big Ten player of the week after averaging 24 points and 14.5 rebounds in Ohio State's wins over Butler and Army.
Turns out that the conference is doing the POW announcements on Tuesdays because of the number of Monday games on the schedule. Oh well. I'll look Tuesday.
Big Ten teams posted a 12-3 record in the Friday through Sunday opening season games. Minnesota lost to No. 2 Stanford but rebounded with a win over Santa Clara. Michigan had a nice road win over Kentucky. Penn State tripped up South Carolina.
Michigan State posted lopsided wins over outclassed Niagara and Stony Brook. Purdue, likewise, opened with an easy win over IUPUI. Those games were more important because the Spartans and Boilermakers each had a key player return to action after missing last season with a knee injury.

The Lady Buckeyes will entertain the Syracuse Orange Wednesday night at 7PM at the Schottenstein Center.
The Ladies expect to extend their record to 3 -0 .
Among a few of the players to watch will be Freshman guard Samantha Prahalis who is off to a pretty good start.
Others include Jantel Lavender, Star Allen, and Ashlee Trebilcock.
Our team also owns a commanding 8 - 0 series lead against Syracuse.

GO BUCKS

Very impressive seeing the Lady's get near the century mark.

Only a Sophomore, Jantel Lavender has a shot at maybe being the Lady's All-time best if she continues her play and improvement. I'm definitely recording some games this year and check them out since I'm in AZ cant get there in person.

OSU women's basketball
Looming opponents provide early tests

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

November serves as the getting-to-know-you month for a college basketball team, especially one like the Ohio State women with three sophomores and one freshman in the starting lineup.
The 17th-ranked Buckeyes (2-0) are young, and they know it. During the next 17 days, they will begin to learn what lies beyond the Big Ten borders in the way of talent.
The first test arrives tonight in Value City Arena with a game against Syracuse (2-0), a rising program in the Big East. A trip to Auburn of the Southeastern Conference follows on Sunday. Atlantic Coast Conference power North Carolina comes to Columbus on Dec. 3, with a game at Nebraska of the Big 12 three days later.
