Two years ago they were a 1 seed and lost in the 2nd round. I think to BC but I could be wrong.

Yep, that's correct. That at least could be somewhat excused as a bad draw. Last year was a Marist team who was probably better than their seed.

This year was embarrassing. I've attended most of this season's women's games, and I turned off last night's game early. It wasn't so much the deficit as it was seeing things like missed threes come off for FSU, and not a single white jersey underneath the hoop. There just seemed to be no intensity, which to me is much worse than the loss itself.

I watched a little bit of it also but turned it off for the same reason that you did. I really don't know who to blame for these NCAA fiascoes... Foster or the players.

Tough to say when one looks at Foster's run at Vanderbilt. In 11 years his team reached the Sweet 16 or further 8 times. That said, players come and go yet the early exits continue in Columbus.

That's true, but I think he's trying to win with the same strategies that he won with then and it simply doesn't work anymore because the game has evolved. There's more good post players in the women's game than there used to be so it's more difficult to win by just having a great post player. Today's women's game is more about athleticsm and quickness and that's something we lack. I look at players from UNC, LSU and Tennessee and they play a lot more like men athletically than our players do, the best teams are the most athletic in the women's game.
I think Jim Foster did a great job for this program and was a great hire for us considering where our program was at the time. But I think he's taken it as far as he can and it's time for some new, younger blood to come in and take it to another level. I'm afraid if a change isn't made in the next few years that the program is going to start to regress and I'd rather we make the change while we're still at the top of the conference so that the new coach can start building us to a national power than trying to first get back to the top of the Big Ten.

Sleepy Buckeyes tucked in for good

Monday, March 24, 2008 Luke Meredith

Associated Press
Des Moines, Iowa- Ohio State is going home early yet again - and this time, it wasn't even close.
Tanae Davis-Cain scored 27 points, one shy of her career high, and Mara Freshour added 14 points and 12 rebounds to help 11th-seeded Florida State upset sixth-seeded Ohio State, 60-49, on Saturday night in the first round of the women's NCAA Tournament New Orleans Regional.
The Seminoles, a somewhat surprising at-large pick after losing seven of their last 11 games, sure looked as though they belonged against the listless Buckeyes. Florida State (19-13) extended its streak of first-round victories to six dating to 1991.
@StoryAd
"It's a rule," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said of her team's first-round success. "I think it's our conference, the way our conference prepares us for this."
The Seminoles advanced to play third-seeded Oklahoma State tonight. The Cowgirls beat East Tennessee State, 85-73, on Saturday for their first NCAA Tournament win in 12 years.
This was the third straight NCAA Tournament trip that the Buckeyes (22-9) would just as soon forget. Ohio State lost in the second round to Boston College as a No. 1 seed in 2006 and was stunned by 13th-seeded Marist, 67-63, last season.
Ohio State held Florida State to just 32.8 percent from the field, but the Seminoles grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and went 9-of-16 from 3-point range.

Ohio State women's basketball
Another vexing early exit
Buckeyes bounced in NCAA first round for second straight year

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Steve Pope | Associated Press
A glum Buckeyes bench endures the final moments of OSU's 11-point loss to Florida State on Saturday.

Tournament trouble

How Ohio State has fared in the NCAA Tournament under coach Jim Foster:
2003: Lost in second round to Louisiana Tech 74-61
2004: Lost in second round to Boston College 63-48
2005: Lost in regional semifinal to Rutgers 64-58
2006: Lost in second round to Boston College 79-69
2007: Lost in first round to Marist 67-63
2008: Lost in first round to Florida State 60-49

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The end came as abruptly as a fall onto an icy sidewalk. A step, a slip and the helpless sensation of being in midair preceded the heavy thud. As quick as that, the sixth-seeded Ohio State women's basketball team exited the NCAA Tournament by way of a 60-49 opening-round upset loss to No. 11 Florida State on Saturday night in Wells Fargo Arena.

Their Big 10 tournament recent history has been no better.

Foster needs to get his team ready for post season. I believe he will from here on out.
Problem is this has been ongoing for a few years when he gets his team into the tournament. I knows some people, probably including Gene Smith, who are happy with the Big 10 championships. I will admit that they are very nice but to continually win the Big 10 championship and then get bounced early in the NCAA does not give one (me) a fuzzy feeling.

I think the poster above made a great point when he talked about Foster winning at Vanderbilt when post play dominated the women's game. That has changed but has Foster's philosophy towards the game and in his recruiting. I don't see it. Lavender is much more athletic than Davenport which is a step but he really needs to get some athletic players into the program who can shoot the basketball and I just don't see it. Maybe this year's freshman will make good strides come next year because they certainly have great potential but Foster needs to change to a more up-tempo style of play.

I think this is the key. For the last few years, it seems like we're constantly playing 3-on-5 at the offensive end. Almost all our plays go through a handful of players. Admittedly, those are some great players, but that can be largely neutralized by a double team, or a defense that's quick to rotate that direction.

Lavender has proven to be a more than adequate passer for her position - I'd love to see us make the opposition pay for those double teams by some better off-the-ball movement.

BS. You cannot fire a coach who wins multiple league championships in a row based upon 3 unexpected early exits from the NCAA tourney. Doing so would doom the program to failure for years to come.

None of this excuses Foster for his team's poor tournament performance the last 3 years, but let's get real here. He still is a terrific coach.

Pat Summit and Geno are "terrific coaches", Foster is good and nothing more. Keeping him on will doom the program, he isn't getting any younger. Should we wait till we're not even winning this pathetic conference before we make a change? I'd rather be proactive than reactive. The best thing would be if he'd just retire, but I don't think that's going to happen. I don't know if you've noticed, but when coaches stay in the business too long their programs suffer. Have you noticed a steady decline in the Penn State and Florida State football programs? Apparently some of us are satisfied with just winning a mediocre conference....

Really? Other than blind optimism what leads you to believe that anything's going to change? The older the coach is the less likely they are to make changes in how they do things. If it was going to change wouldn't getting knocked out in the second round as a #1 seed two years ago have been the wakeup call?

From the Dispatch article linked above it has been more than 3 years. There was an excellent post above that mentioned when Foster was at Vanderbilt you could dominate the women's game with a good post player. That is no longer true. One of Foster's assistants is considered to be one of the best "post" coaches in the nation but Foster really needs to change not only his game philosophy but his recruiting. The program is at a standstill right now and could be a lot better IMO
